BREAKING | French Mirage 2000 crashes in Mali, crew safe
A French Dassault Mirage 2000D crashed in a deserted area of the region of Hombori, central Mali, on July 20, 2021. Both crew members, a pilot and a weapons system officer, ejected and were recovered, according to the French armed forces. One of them was reportedly injured and transported to Gao military base.
The aircraft, belonging to the 3rd Fighter Wing of the French Air Force, had taken off from the projected airbase (BAP) of Niamey, in Niger.

United reports a 2Q net loss of $0.4 billion, expects to be profitable in the 3Q and 4Q
United Airlines (UAL) today announced second-quarter 2021 financial results. The company now expects positive adjusted pre-tax income¹ in the third and fourth quarters of 2021 as travel demand rebounds.
The company’s second quarter performance largely exceeded original expectations as international long haul and business travel accelerated even faster than anticipated, together with continued yield improvement. Looking ahead, the company expects continued gains as more businesses return by end of summer and into 2022, with a full recovery in demand anticipated by 2023.

Garuda Indonesia fails to pay aircraft lease, faces a lawsuit
Indonesia’s flag carrier, Garuda Indonesia, is facing a lawsuit from an Ireland-based aircraft lessor AerCap. The latest lawsuit came after the cash-strapped air carrier failed to pay aircraft lease due to the setbacks of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The aircraft leasing firm based in Ireland, AerCap, filed the insolvency lawsuit against Garuda Indonesia with the Supreme Court of New South Wales in Australia on June 4, 2021, the airline revealed on July 15, 2021. During the ongoing trial, Garuda said it was “in the process of negotiating with AerCap to reach a commercial deal and restructure the contract outside the Court”.

easyJet reports a loss of £318.3 million ($436 million) in the third quarter
easyJet has maintained its disciplined approach to capacity and cash management during Q3 and, as a result, total cash burn during the quarter reduced to £55 million. Fixed costs plus capex have averaged £34 million per week, outperforming the £40 million per week guidance given at Q1. This disciplined cost and cash management has enabled easyJet to maintain net debt broadly flat at c.£2.0 billion and a headline loss before tax of £318 million, which is in line with expectations.

Malta Airport Foundation collects 1.8 tonnes of marine litter
Marsaxlokk and Marsalforn were the two localities chosen by the Malta Airport Foundation for this year’s underwater clean-ups.
With the help of some 30 divers from Calypso Subaqua Club and Atlam Subaqua Club, as well as several other volunteers who gave a helping hand on land, the Malta Airport Foundation collected around 1.8 tonnes of waste, which is roughly equivalent to the weight of the world’s largest mammal – the blue whale – at birth.

Collins Aerospace has completed deployment of its ARINC SelfPass biometrics solution at Tokyo Haneda, one of the busiest airports in Asia-Pacific.

On July 20, 2021, at 9 a.m. EDT, the New Shepard rocket took off, materializing 22 years of work for Blue Origin. The company was founded at the turn of the millennium by Amazon’s boss Jeff Bezos, who in the meantime became the richest man in the world. The goal of Blue Origin is to make space more accessible by developing reusable space launchers.
