Boeing asked FAA in 2017 to strip MCAS from Max training report
Former Boeing chief 737 technical pilot Mark Forkner asked the US Federal Aviation Administration in 2017 to remove mention of the 737 Max's MCAS system from a report used to develop training standards for 737 Max pilots, according to newly-disclosed emails.
The emails, released by the House Transportation Committee, suggest MCAS was initially mentioned in a draft of a Flight Standardisation Board (FSB) report.

Boeing delays alerting FAA of pilot's 2016 messages about MCAS
Boeing handed over to the US Federal Aviation Administration 17 October instant messages between two Boeing pilots in which one expresses serious concern with the 737 Max's Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS).
Reuters broke the story 18 October, followed by a report in The New York Times.

Airbus proposing 319t A350-1000 for Project Sunrise
Airbus has started listing the A350-1000 as having a maximum take-off weight of 319t, around 3t higher than any of the current weight variants featured in its most recent detailed technical data documents.
The airframer had previously confirmed to FlightGlobal that it was looking at a higher MTOW figure.

Qantas 787 arrives in Sydney after non-stop flight from JFK
Qantas's first Project Sunrise test flight has arrived in Sydney, the non-stop Boeing 787-9 touching down on runway 16R some 19h 16min after becoming airborne from New York JFK.
Project Sunrise is the airline's initiative to open nonstop services to the Australian east coast from New York and London from around 2022-23.

Colorful Guizhou Airlines to receive first A320neo
China’s Colorful Guizhou Airlines will receive its first Airbus A320neo in October, stepping up from the regional jet operations for which the carrier was established in 2015.
The A320neo is one of four the carrier is leasing from GE Capital Aviation Services, with deliveries set to continue into 2020, GECAS said.

Southwest, Air Canada extend 737 MAX removal to February 2020
Southwest Airlines has removed all Boeing 737 MAX flying from its schedule to early February, later than other US carriers that have yet to revise their estimates from an early January return-to-service. Dallas-based Southwest announced Oct. 17 it was pulling the aircraft through Feb. 8, 2020, an extension of one month from Jan. 5 previously. The revision removes roughly 175 weekday flights from the carrier’s total peak-day schedule of more than 4,000 daily flights.

Qatar Airways, LATAM expand codeshare agreement
Qatar Airways and LATAM Airlines Brazil have expanded their codeshare agreement, which began Oct. 15.
The partnership enhances connectivity between Doha-based Qatar’s hub via LATAM’s hubs in São Paulo Guarulhos (Brazil) to destinations throughout Brazil and South America, including Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Curitiba (Brazil); Lima (Peru) and Bogota (Colombia).

Cathay Pacific sees passenger traffic drop 7.1% in September
Cathay Pacific Airways continues to see passenger numbers fall in September as anti-government protests in Hong Kong drag into the 20th week.
In September, Cathay carried 2.4 million passengers, down 7.1% year-over-year (YOY), while passenger growth (RPKs) was up a scant 0.1%.

Ryanair to launch Armenian flights
Ryanair will begin operations from Armenia, which will become the Irish LCC’s 40th country.
The carrier will launch flights to destinations in Italy and Germany in 2020.
Armenia is a small nation that was part of the former Soviet Union, located in the mountainous Caucasus region between Europe and Asia.

UK charter Titan Airways moves toward all-Airbus fleet
UK-based charter and ACMI provider Titan Airways has acquired its first Airbus widebody as it closes in on its target of an all-European fleet.
The London Stansted-based airline will put the ex-Avianca A330-200 into service as a replacement for a Boeing 767-300ER that will be returned to its lessor in 1Q 2020, MD Alastair Willson said.

TUI Airways: Tour operator model is not dead
UK leisure carrier TUI Airways believes the tour operator model is still relevant, despite the failure of UK rival Thomas Cook, but this relevance rests on digitalization, diversification and adapting to customer needs.
Dawn Wilson became TUI Airways managing director in January 2019, leading TUI Airways in the UK and Scandinavian carrier TUIfly Nordic.

Engine failure preceded DC-3 ditching off Nassau
Both pilots have been rescued from a Douglas DC-3 freighter which crashed into the ocean while operating a service to Nassau.
It had been flying from Opa-Locka in Florida when the accident occurred shortly before 16:30 on 18 October.

Air Tanzania hands first Dash 8 order to newly-created DHC
Tanzania's government is ordering a single De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400, marking the first firm deal for the manufacturer since investors acquired the former Q400 turboprop programme from Bombardier.
The government's flight agency will lease the aircraft, configured with 78 seats, to flag carrier Air Tanzania.

Fatal accident inquiry opens after PenAir Saab overrun
Investigation of US regional carrier PenAir's Saab 2000 overrun in Alaska has turned into a fatal accident inquiry after a passenger succumbed to critical injuries.
The US National Transportation Safety Board has sent a team of nine to probe the landing accident involving flight 3296 from Anchorage to Unalaska airport on 17 October.

Russian investigators are probing an overrun incident involving an Angara Airlines Antonov An-148 at Mirny in the Sakha republic.
The aircraft – provisionally identified as RA-61713 – landed on Mirny's runway 25 shortly after 09:00 following a service from Irkutsk.

FAA: Strategy to prevent drone disruption soon to be released
The National Security Council (NSC) will soon release a strategy for preventing drone disruptions at major US metropolitan airports, according to the FAA.
The concept of operations (conops) for deploying counter-drone technology will be applied at the FAA’s Core 30 airports—those which serve major metropolitan areas with the highest volume of air traffic. It will be a tactical response plan “with a unified concept that involves all of the relevant stakeholders in the airport environment,” FAA Deputy Associate Administrator Angela Stubblefield told the agency’s Drone Advisory Committee on Oct. 17.

Philadelphia Airport receives almost $1m for train platform improvements
Philadelphia Airport has received two grants to rehabilitate platforms and canopies at its four stops on SEPTA’s Airport Line.
Two grants totalling $924,900 have been given to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for a platform improvements project at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) Airport Regional Rail Line stops.

USAF looks for expeditionary precision landing system for Pacific
The US Air Force (USAF) is looking for a precision approach landing system to enable its aircraft to land at expeditionary air strips on islands in the Pacific Ocean.
The service is asking military contractors to submit white papers that outline component-level designs and trade-off analyses to determine the right mix of requirements necessary for a Small Footprint Precision Approach and Landing Capability (SF-PALC) system, it says in an online notice on 17 October.
