Astronautics prepares first EFB upgrade since 787 EIS
Astronautics will supply Boeing 787s with the first electronic flight bag (EFB) update since the type entered service five years ago. The schedule for cutting the block point five (BP5) EPB upgrade into the 787 production line is still begin set with Boeing, says Brian Keery, a product strategy manager for the Minneapolis-based company.

FAA plans to hire 1,400 air traffic controllers
The Federal Aviation Administration is planning to hire an additional 1,400 air traffic controllers across the US. The one-week application window will open Monday.

Russia’s relaunched Ilyushin Il-114 to be assembled at Sokol plant
A relaunched version of Russia’s Ilyushin Il-114 regional airliner will be assembled at the Sokol plant in Nizhny Novgorod, a part of MiG Corp. The program could cost up to RUB55 billion ($825 million) and the plant will be able to assemble up to 12 aircraft per year, Russia’s United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) said in a statement. “Up to 40% of the project manufacturing could be localized at Nizhny Novgorod and Volga region. The companies like Hydromash, Polet, Teploobmennik will be involved in the project,” UAC president Yury Slusar said.

Air Canada designs IFE solution for blind passengers
Air Canada has pledged to make its in-flight entertainment system accessible for blind passengers. The carrier designed a template that will fit over the touchscreen system for visually impaired users.

Air France: Cabin crew strike cost more than $100 million
Air France estimates the week-long cabin crew strike, which ended Aug. 2, will cost the company more than €90 million ($100.7 million). The airline said it had to cancel nearly 1,400 flights during the seven-day strike, affecting 180,000 customers. Over the course of the week, Air France managed to operate more than 80% of its short- and medium-haul services and more than 90% of long-haul flights. Services returned to normal Aug. 3, although the airline warned of possible last-minute disruptions because of knock-on effects of the dispute.

Alaska to add 2 destinations from Seattle
Alaska Airlines plans to add service from Seattle to two new destinations in 2017. "With the addition of nonstop service to Indianapolis and Wichita, Alaska Airlines now offers nonstop service to a total of 89 cities from Seattle -- more than twice as many as any other airline," said John Kirby, vice president of capacity planning at the carrier.

Copa Holdings reports $55 million 2Q net profit
Panama City-based Copa Holdings posted net income of $54.5 million for the 2016 second quarter, down 14.9% from a net income of $64.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Copa Holdings—the parent company of Panama’s Copa Airlines and Copa Airlines Colombia—said the second-quarter results reflect “a low-yield environment, mainly driven by the continued economic weakness in Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela.”

Emirates crash: First report expected within a month
The United Arab Emirates’ General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) will produce a preliminary report into the Aug. 3 crash of an Emirates Airline Boeing 777-300 at Dubai International Airport within a month, the regulator said Aug. 4. The widebody jet burst into flames as it crash landed in Dubai following a flight from Trivandrum International Airport, southern India. All 282 passengers and 18 crew escaped unharmed, although one firefighter was killed while dousing the blaze. The aircraft was destroyed.

Emirates still recovering from post-crash Dubai disruption
Emirates is still recovering its schedule following severe disruption at Dubai caused by the accident involving one of the carrier’s Boeing 777s. Fifty Emirates services were either cancelled or diverted following the 3 August accident, affecting some 23,000 passengers, as Dubai was closed for 6h.

Hainan Airlines acquires 23.7% stake in Brazil’s Azul
HNA Group subsidiary Hainan Airlines has completed a deal for a 23.7% stake in Brazil’s Azul Airlines, with a $450 million investment. Haikou, China-based Hainan is also expected to appoint three members to Azul’s board. According to a company statement, both carriers will also cooperate to develop a global networking synergy in the fields of codesharing, new route development, frequent flyer program, marketing programs and cargo.

Southwest to launch Houston-Omaha route in 2017
Southwest Airlines plans to launch service from Hobby Airport in Houston to Omaha, Neb., next year. The carrier will deploy a Boeing 737 for the daily flight.

United Airlines is simplifying its MileagePlus awards program, pricing awards based on one-way travel with the ability to combine one-way awards in the case of round-trip fares and multi-destination travel.

Dubai Operating With One Runway After Crash
Dubai Airport is still operating on one runway as the clear up continues following the crash landing of the Emirates Boeing 777 on Wednesday. The airport authority said in a statement that higher priority was being given to arriving flights and wide-bodied aircraft to ease congestion in the terminals.

French Firms To Upgrade Havana’s Jose Marti Airport
Bouygues and Aeroports de Paris have been selected to upgrade and operate Cuba’s Jose Marti Airport in Havana to cope with the expected increase in passenger numbers from the United States. Cuba’s Transport Ministry said Bouygues was chosen because of its involvement in construction in Cuba, and Aeroports de Paris due to its experience of running major international airports.

Fraport Sees Drop In Frankfurt Passenger Numbers
Fraport said a 1.7 percent drop in earnings (EBITDA) to EUR€378.4 million in the first six months of 2016 was partly due to a slowdown in passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport and the corresponding drop in retail revenues. Total revenue in the first half was just over EUR€1.22 billion, down from the EUR€1.24 billion achieved in the same period of 2015.

India’s navy to upgrade 10 Ka-28 helicopters
India’s ministry of defense has cleared an upgrade program for its 10 Navy Kamov Ka-28 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters. The $294 million deal received defense acquisition council approval in July, says the navy. “The KA-28 will receive state-of-the-art western weapons and sensors and the upgrade is to be completed in 42 months.”
