Why aviation won't reach environmental Utopia
Our special report this week highlights the fraught nature of the relationship between aviation and the planet: flying is not environmentally friendly, and there is no easy way around that. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion, then, that new thinking is needed. Between the public and private sectors, Europe is spending some €350 million ($380 million) a year over 16 years in a co-ordinated bid to develop cleaner, quieter aircraft technologies. The Clean Sky programme is mirrored by US efforts led by NASA, so no small amount of money and brain power is being deployed to counter the environmental impact of aviation growth.

Transaero accused of breaking lease agreements
Aircraft leased by Russia’s Transaero Airline were not maintained properly in a disregard of lease agreements, Sberbank president Herman Gref told Russia´s TV Rossiya 24 at the end of December 2015. “As long as we work with that case, we discover new surprises—we have discovered unreliable financials and that aircraft were not maintained properly. Most of the aircraft are not in working order, while the debts to MRO providers are significant and we discover new debts. We do not have any contacts with the owners. I would recommend the owners to contact creditors and to be more loyal to us,” Gref said.

WestJet gains ETOPs for 767s, flies own widebodies to Hawaii
WestJet has launched flights from Calgary and Edmonton to Hawaii using its own Boeing 767-300ERs, a major step for the Canadian low-cost carrier as it gears up for widebody service to London Gatwick. WestJet, formerly an all-737 operator, took delivery of its first widebody, a 767-300ER, in August 2015. It was the first of four used 767-300ERs that WestJet is adding to its fleet. WestJet planned to start seasonal 767-300ER services from western Canada to Hawaii in December with two of those 767s. However, those plans hit a snag because the aircraft did not have extended-range twin-engine operation (ETOPs) certification.

There's someone taxiing to the other end, did they manage that with a slight tailwind? {bugeye} Imagine if they'd stood on the brakes properly!
