Quebec government to put $1bn in new Bombardier CSeries partnership
The Quebec government will make a $1 billion cash investment in Bombardier that will allow the Montreal manufacturer to take its new CSeries aircraft through certification to full production, Bombardier announced Thursday. The company also announced a $3.2 billion write-down on development costs aimed at accelerating returns from sales of the narrowbody airliner.

CFM delivers first 737 MAX engines to Boeing
The first 737 MAX with mounted LEAP-1B engines is expected to be rolled out by Boeing in December, and the re-engined aircraft’s first flight is slated for early 2016. CFM EVP Allen Paxson said in a statement, “We have put this engine through thousands of test hours and cycles on the ground and in the air on our own 747 flying testbed and we are thrilled with the results we have achieved.”

Mitsubishi Aircraft gets regulatory clearance for MRJ’s first flight
Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has given its approval for Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. to conduct the first flight of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ). The clearance was the final regulatory hurdle before the MRJ’s first flight could take place. After repeated delays, the MRJ’s first flight is now scheduled for the week of Nov. 9.

Aeroméxico triples 3Q net profit to $43 million
Grupo Aeroméxico reported MXP737 million ($43.1 million) in consolidated net profit for the 2015 third-quarter, more than tripling its 3Q 2014 net result. Last year, the airline posted third-quarter net income of MXP201 million. Year-to-date, through Sept. 30, Grupo Aeroméxico has produced net profits totaling MXP1.02 billion, a 50-fold increase over the MXP22 million the Mexico-City based airline reported for the first nine months of 2014.

Air France-KLM posts sharp 3Q net profit increase
Air France-KLM Group has reported a third-quarter net income of €480 million ($529.6 million), up from a €86 million in the year-ago period, due to strong summer trading. “A favorable environment, principally characterized by lower fuel prices and strong demand over the summer, resulted in an improvement of Air France-KLM’s results during the third quarter and first nine months of 2015. Such circumstances came in addition to the positive effects of the Transform 2015 plan implemented since 2012,” Air France-KLM CEO Alexandre de Juniac said at the release of the results on Oct. 29.

Azul, United Airlines announce codeshare agreement
Azul Brazilian Airlines and United Airlines have announced that they are deepening their existing partnership by implementing a codeshare agreement. The agreement will streamline the experience of passengers transferring between the US and Brazil.

China Eastern more than doubles 9-month profit
China Eastern Airlines reported a net profit of CNY5.33 billion ($837 million) for the first nine months of 2015, more than doubling a net income of CNY2.06 billion in the year-ago period. The Shanghai-based carrier credited the continuous market demand growth and lower fuel prices for the profit increase.

Dynamic Airways 767 catches fire on Fort Lauderdale taxiway
A Dynamic Airways Boeing 767-200 caught fire on a Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (Florida) International Airport (FLL) taxiway as it was holding for takeoff to Caracas, Venezuela. FLL said on Twitter that Dynamic flight 406 “experienced an engine fire while taxing to the runway,” adding, “The fire was quickly extinguished. Passengers were evacuated.” The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time.

El Al Israel Airlines to take up to 15 Boeing 787s
El Al Israel Airlines has signed a firm order for three Boeing 787s, it is finalizing a contract for another six direct from the manufacturer and will lease a further six of the type. Announcing the deal on Oct. 29, Boeing valued the nine directly sourced aircraft at more than $2.2 billion at list prices.

Far Eastern Air Transport seeks MD-82 and MD-83 replacement
Taiwan-based regional carrier Far Eastern Air Transport (FEAT) is looking to expand from its home base at Taipei's Songshan airport into China, and to replace its aging McDonnell Douglas fleet. The company is set to take delivery of one new 737-800 from Air Lease Corp. in May 2016, to replace some of its MD-82s and MD-83s. It is also in the process of retraining its pilots to handle the new aircraft.

Icelandair increases 2015 profit outlook
Icelandair is now expecting to deliver a full-year EBITDA of $210-$215 million, compared with its original $160-$165 million guidance, due to higher revenues and lower fuel and maintenance costs. The Icelandic carrier had already upgraded its guidance to $180-$185 million at the release of its second-quarter results. However, its third-quarter results—due for formal release at the close of business on Oct. 29—will be “better than anticipated,” rising from $124 million to $150 million.

JetBlue ends cargo service, focuses on passengers
JetBlue officially got out of the cargo business about a week ago, and one of the factors leading to that business line’s cessation was the airline’s move to place — some would say cram — 15 additional seats into its fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft in the coach section starting in the second half of 2016.

Lufthansa Group posts record 9-month net profit
Lufthansa Group delivered a nine-month net profit of €1.75 billion ($ 1.97 billion), up 262.7% from €482 million in the year-ago period. The German carrier attributed the significant improvement strong summer business for the group’s passenger airlines, low oil prices and a €500 million profit from the equity stake sale in JetBlue in the first half. It also identified a cost savings of €1 billion for 2016 to remain competitive.

Southwest to route more flights through Chicago Midway this spring
Beginning in April, Southwest Airlines will route more flights through its Chicago Midway hub to enable its passengers to connect to more than 60 US cities and eight international destinations.

Transaero must apply for new AOC to relaunch flights
Transaero Airlines must apply for a new air operator’s certificate (AOC) if it wants to resume flights, according to Alexander Neradko, head of Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency. Authorities canceled Transaero’s AOC on Oct. 26 due to financial and safety concerns. The procedure can take up to 70 days, but the airline must prove it can operate flights without revenue for at least three months.

Virgin America reports $72 million net profit in 3Q
Virgin America reported $71.9 million in third-quarter net income, up 72.7% from a net profit of $41.6 million the year-ago quarter. The San Francisco-based carrier’s third-quarter operating margin was 18%, up 5.1 points year-over-year (YOY). Both figures are reportedly the highest-ever in Virgin America’s eight-year history. “We generated record earnings and margins in the third quarter,” Virgin America president and CEO David Cush said. “The drop in fuel costs was a big driver of that improvement with an average … [with] cost per gallon, including hedges, dropping by about 38%.”

France To Start Sale Of Nice, Lyon Airports
France aims to launch the sale process of Nice Côte d'Azur and Lyon-Saint-Exupery airports before the end of the year. "The goal is for an effective launch by the end of the year," French Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron said, adding that indicative offers were expected around the beginning of next year.

Turkey gifts retired T-37 trainers to Pakistan
Turkey is to donate 34 Cessna T-37 Tweet jet trainers/light attack aircraft to Pakistan in an agreement signed on 28 October. The decision followed high-level military talks between the two countries in Ankara, where Turkey agreed to supply the aircraft plus spares “gratis” to Islamabad.

USN Growler order complete as Boeing seeks F/A-18 orders
The US Navy has contracted Boeing to deliver its final tranche of EA-18G Growlers, and the company is now looking to the Pentagon and abroad for more orders to sustain the common Growler and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet assembly line in St Louis beyond 2017. The $898 million order for 15 aircraft, announced this week, rounds out the navy’s total requirement for 153 EA-18G advanced electronic attack jets – although Boeing says there are ongoing discussions and analysis with the navy about additional Growler and Super Hornet orders.
