Airbus starts assembling A350-1000 wing
Airbus has commenced production of the A350-1000 wing at its specialist UK plant in Broughton. The wing for the largest member of the A350 family is based on that for the -900 but features modifications including an extended trailing edge. Work on fixed trailing edge sections began in May.

Airlines

Shares of Alaska Air Group fly high on Seattle demand
Alaska Air Group, hit a record stock high of $81.51 as the SeaTac-based carrier continues to ride on its growing array of routes and Seattle’s strong economy. Alaska has been pouring resources into battling off competitor Delta Air Lines at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which is Alaska’s primary hub and Atlanta-based Delta’s West Coast International hub. Alaska has not only added dozens of flights, but passengers are buying tickets for them.

American debuts 787 on route from Chicago to Tokyo
American Airlines has deployed the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on a route from Chicago O'Hare to Tokyo Narita International Airport. Starting today, American will also provide daily service between the two airports. American also uses the 787 on three international routes from Dallas-Fort Worth.

Reunion Police, Army Halt MH370 Debris Search
Police and army personnel on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion have called off their search for more debris from the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines MH370. A piece of wing was found on the shore of the French-governed island last month and Malaysian authorities have said paint and maintenance-record matches proved it came from the missing Boeing 777.

Ryanair Formally Accepts IAG Offer For Aer Lingus
Ryanair has formally agreed to sell its stake in Aer Lingus to IAG, giving IAG the approval of over 90 percent of shareholders in Ireland's former flag carrier. "We submitted our acceptance of the IAG offer today (18 Aug)," a Ryanair spokesman said when asked if it had agreed to sell its 30 percent stake.

Bird strike tears open radome of SIA 777
A bird strike badly damaged the nose of a Singapore Airlines (SIA) Boeing 777-200ER aircraft operating from Istanbul to Singapore on 17 August. Photos on social media show that the radome of the aircraft, registered 9V-SVB, is torn open. The aircraft also suffered a dent to its right engine cowling. The aircraft, which was operating flight SQ391, turned back and landed safely. None of the 255 passengers and 14 crew on board suffered injuries.

Indonesia recovers recorders of crashed ATR 42
Indonesia’s transport ministry has recovered the flight recorders from the crashed Trigana Air ATR 42-300. In a Tweet, the ministry says the recorders were recovered at 13:40 local time on 18 August. It adds that the bodies of all 49 passengers and five crew members on board have also been found and recovered. There were no survivors.

United launches nonstop service from Ark. airport to SFO
United Airlines is now offering nonstop flights from Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport to San Francisco, according to a Monday news release from the airport. The tickets went on sale Saturday. The daily flights, operated by SkyWest Airlines, leave Northwest Arkansas at 7:45 a.m., arriving in San Francisco at 9:47 a.m.

US Airways honors its history with final flight
US Airways plans to fly its final flight on Oct. 17 to its hub airports. "We've officially changed the flight number for the last US Airways departure from SFO to PHL to US 1939, celebrating the year US Airways first operated under All American Aviation," said spokeswoman Martha Thomas. American Airlines and US Airways announced plans to merge in 2013, and all flights will eventually fly under the American banner.

O'Hare unveils power-charging wall for mobile devices
Chicago O'Hare Airport unveiled $3 million in technology and other upgrades on Monday. The upgrades include a charging wall for phones and mobile devices, as well as new seating and portable liquor carts.

Ilyushin selects electric system for Il-112V transport
Russian manufacturer Ilyushin has decided to equip the Il-112V light military transport with electrically-driven wing flaps, according to supplier Technodynamica. Ilyushin selected the Rostec subsidiary that specializes in aircraft systems to supply the electric power systems to drive the flaps, Technodynamica says in a 13 August news release. The decision indicates that Russia is pursuing a higher level of sophistication for the twin-turboprop Il-112V aircraft, which is scheduled to enter service after 2016.

US, Cuba Work To Resume Scheduled Flights - Report
The White House is seeking an agreement with Cuba to begin scheduled commercial flights between the two countries as soon as December, according to a newspaper report. The Obama administration is also examining ways of loosening US congressional restrictions on travel by Americans to the Communist-ruled island, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Tunisia Allows Libyan Flights To Resume
Tunisia said it will reopen its airspace to flights to and from Libya as safety standards at its airports have improved. Tunisia, hit by two major militant attacks this year, has banned the flights since March, fearing more violence could spill over from Libya where two rival governments, Islamist militants and other militias are vying for power.
