Aircraft Industries rolls out first L-410NG
Aircraft Industries on 15 July rolled out the first example of the enhanced NG variant of its long-running Let L-410 commuter turboprop. First flight of the model is anticipated in the coming days from its facility at Kunovice airport in the Czech Republic. Changes over the previous L-410UVP-E20 include a modified wing and additional fuel tanks – increasing range to 1,350nm (2,500km) and endurance to 10h – a larger cargo compartment, and a Garmin G3000 full-glass cockpit.

Comac takes delivery of wing-body fairing for C919
Comac has taken delivery of the wing-body fairing section that will be installed on its first C919 flight test aircraft. The Chinese airframer says development of the part, manufactured by Hafei Aviation, started in 2012. It admits however that due to the complexity of the part's manufacturing process, various issues were encountered in the processing of the composite parts, as well as in work coordination.

Aer Lingus shareholders weigh in behind IAG takeover
Aer Lingus shareholders have voted overwhelmingly in favour of motions supporting IAG's proposed takeover of the Irish flag carrier. Four resolutions were tabled at an extraordinary general meeting today, and in each case more than 99% of votes were in favour. The resolutions combine to redesignate the Irish minister of finance's single share in the airline as a B share and to endorse connectivity commitments negotiated to meet Irish takeover rules.

American Airlines adds 12,000 sq. foot cargo facility in Atlanta
American Airlines is expanding its cargo operations again with the addition of another 12,000 square-foot warehouse in Atlanta. The new facility will help reduce processing times according to an official announcement.

Delta brings in $1B in net adjusted income in 2Q
In its second quarter, Delta Air Lines posted $1 billion in adjusted net income. "Delta's record results have allowed the company to invest in its employees through higher wage rates and profit sharing; improve the experience for our customers through new aircraft and innovative partnerships with global carriers; and uniquely deliver value for our shareholders by accelerating our capital returns while also paying down debt," CEO Richard Anderson said in a statement.

JetBlue makes deal with Major League Baseball, sets sights on other sports
JetBlue has signed a deal with Major League Baseball to provide free streaming of every game to passengers. The deal was made possible by JetBlue's early adoption of satellite-based Wi-Fi, and it will be paid for through advertising. The airline is reaching out to other sporting organizations to provide streaming games throughout the year.

Norwegian Says Long-Haul Expansion Paying Off
Norwegian Air Shuttle swung to an operating profit in the second quarter, as its bet on the long-haul market turned profitable for the first time. Norwegian, Europe's number three budget airline by passenger numbers behind Ryanair and easyJet, has expanded rapidly with the addition of long-haul flights in 2013, making it the only budget carrier to offer direct flights between Europe and the United States.

United CEO touts passenger benefits of airline's new app
The new United Airlines application will offer more convenience and options for passengers, according to president and CEO Jeff Smisek. "We're investing heavily in technology and control for consumers, we've had 20 million downloads of our app," he says. "It's superb, I know that because I use other people's apps and ours is better."

United Awards Hackers Miles For Revealing Risks
United Airlines has awarded millions of frequent flier miles to hackers who have uncovered gaps in the carrier's web security, in a first for the US airline industry. United confirmed that it has paid out two awards worth 1 million miles each, worth dozens of free domestic flights on the airline. United did not confirm tweets from individuals who say they have been paid smaller awards as well.

Jessica Alba is expanding her billion-dollar home and baby product company by opening up automatic kiosks in airports. The Honest Company, which she founded, opened up kiosks in five airports across the United States offering last-minute goods to travelers.

Lockheed to lead South Korea’s KC-16 upgrade
In a reversal of fortunes, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman have emerged as the principle benefactors of a renegotiated South Korean KF-16 fighter upgrade programme, valued at $2.7 billion. The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a 15 July statement that Seoul’s second request to upgrade 134 C- and D-model KF-16s with new avionics, weapons and active electronically scanned array radars has been approved by the State Department.

EU Threatens Court Action Over 'Single Sky'
The European Commission ordered five countries to accelerate the merging of their national air corridors, threatening to take them to court unless they acted within two months. Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands were given two months to finish implementing a "functional airspace block" created in 2013 to shorten flight paths by aligning airspace around traffic flows, not state borders.
