CSA To Get Korean Air Capital Boost
CSA Czech Airlines has received a commitment for financial support from its biggest shareholder Korean Air and from the Czech state. The Czech carrier said that Korean Air's support was contingent upon a restructuring plan, the latest attempt to reverse losses that have dogged it since a failed expansion attempt a decade ago. The company has steadily sold assets and shrunk its fleet and workforce, and in September announced it would reduce its staff, including pilots, by a third. "The CSA board received a decision by Korean Air to financially contribute to CSA's stabilization and also a proposal for a contribution to its capital," it said.

Singapore Airlines is injecting more cash into Tiger Airways, illustrating its resolve to persevere in the low-cost segment after the budget affiliate bowed out of three regional markets. The aim is for a resource-sharing relationship akin to that SIA has with premium regional subsidiary SilkAir.

S.Africa Would Consider Strategic Partner For SAA
South Africa would consider a strategic partner for struggling state-run airline SAA, the minister of public enterprises said, as the government looks for spending cuts. South African Airways, which has received two government bailouts totaling ZAR10 billion rand (USD$910 million), was recently rebuffed for another cash injection. "Will we look at a strategic partner? I think so. I would like them to investigate going for a strategic partner," Lynne Brown told reporters in response to a question over an equity partner for SAA.

Trains and Planes

A large, two-engined train was making it's way across America. While crossing the Western mountains, one of the engines broke down. “No problem, we can make it to Denver and get a replacement engine there.” the engineer thought, and carried on at half power. Farther on down the line, (if you didn't guess) the other engine broke down, and the train came to a standstill in the middle of nowhere.

The engineer needed to inform the passengers about why the train had stopped, and always trying to look on the bright side of things, made the following announcement: “Ladies and Gentlemen, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that both engines have failed, and we will be stuck here for some time until the additional engines arrive. The good news is that you didn't take this trip in a plane!”
