... And only Spaceport that is also an International Airport. This could be where you make terrestrial-to-spaceflight connections in the future.

MIDLAND -- Midland International Airport is officially licensed as the 9th U.S. spaceport. Director of Airport Operations Marv Esterly is in Washington, D.C. this morning at a special meeting of the Federal Aviation Administration's Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee. He has just now accepted the new license and announced that the airport will be renamed "Midland International Air and Spaceport".

NASA Human Spaceflight Committee Member, Mary Lynne Dittmar, notes that MAF's new status as a spaceport is the first to ever be co-located with an airport offering carrier service marking "a big milestone for integrating commercial space with commercial air."

Not yet, but there are already two companies that are gearing up for it- XCOR Aerospace and Orbital Outfitters. It was a close one because the EPA tried to stop it because they said sonic boom activity associated with it could interfere with the mating habits of some indigenous prairie chicken.

MIDLAND, TX - Commercial space travel company XCOR Aerospace is slowly completing their move to Midland. Their sign is now up at the hanger near Midland International Airport where the companies’ new headquarters will be. Officials with XCOR tell us the cockpit for the space craft has arrived and they are waiting on final approval from the FAA on designating Midland International as a space port. That designation is required for the company to test fly the space craft.

Looks like part one is accomplished in getting the Spaceport designation - now all that seems to be needed is test flights to take place.
