Yesterday, KCEF had a "Wings and Wheels" show with several WW2 fighters in attendance. One of which was a P-47. On the side of the fuselage was its "kill" decals, including 20 Nazi flags depicting the aircraft's 20 kills. My question, is would a shot like this be inappropriate to include into the DB because of the swastikas or, would it be alright simply because its a historical depiction.

Unedited shot.

Very cool, I'd say upload it. It's part of history. Also, IT KILLED TRAINS! {thumbsup}

I'd say historical, and that even includes pictures of actual nazi aircraft.

There were also decals for personnel... {mischief}

Speaking of P-47s, when I was growing up I saw a great vintage documentary on PBS called "Thunderbolt" about a P-47 squadron based on Corsica that conducted raids on the Italian peninsula and it features a lot of color gun-camera footage. If you skip to this part there's a train-strafing sequence:

Love the dead-pan narration!

Here's the whole thing:

It's sad we live in an era when this question has to be asked, yet no one would give a second thought to a naked maiden depicted in nose art.

I agree. It's part of history, give it an upload.
A million great ideas...

Wait a minute, was this P-47 in combat before? As I understood, no 'used' planes came back from Europe. All the ones that fly are the ones that never made it over.

I know of several combat veteran of the ETO P-51s that are here in the US.
And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen

I do not know. My guess is its a replica of a P-47 that saw combat. As I had heard the same as you. That said, I know of a couple WW2 planes at the New England Air Museum that did see combat. So who knows.

This is what I found out.

While the majority of the earlier versions and war-weary aircraft were quickly scrapped, most of the last production blocks would continue in service with the post-war USAAF and the new USAF. For the next five years, these aircraft would continue as a front-line fighter with the active airforce.
