American Issues Layoff Notices, Cuts Flights

American Airlines said on Tuesday it has notified more than 11,000 workers they could lose their jobs as part of its bankruptcy, and added it is cutting flights by one to two percent for the rest of September and October.

Lufthansa planning European LCC, counting strike costs

Lufthansa (LH) will present plans for a new European low-cost airline, dubbed internally as “Direct4you,” to its supervisory board Wednesday. LH said it must change its European operations because the carrier is losing three-digit-million euros annually within its European network.

Indonesian air force inducts first four Super Tucanos
Indonesia has inducted its first four Embraer EMB-314 Super Tucano light attack aircraft at Malang air base. The aircraft were officially handed over to the air force in a ceremony, a statement on the nation's defence ministry website said.

Other News

Emirates (EK) is expecting delivery of its 24th and 25th Airbus A380. Both aircraft should be handed over to the carrier next week.

AviancaTaca has taken delivery of its 100th Airbus aircraft, the 252-seat A330-200.

GECAS delivered two leased Airbus A320s to BH Air, one new Airbus A320 to Middle East Airlines and will lease nine CFM56-5B-powwered Airbus A319s to Allegiant Air, with first delivery scheduled Nov. 12 and the rest through 2015.

Eastern Airways took delivery of a third Embraer ERJ-145, bringing its Embraer fleet to five. The jet will fly on its domestic network as well as on its charter flying program.

Airbus will install Sharklets on previously ordered A320 aircraft for AirAsia, scheduled for delivery from the end of 2012. AirAsia will be the first to operate an A320 with Sharklets.

---In 1988…Israel launches its first satellite, for secret military reconnaissance.

---In 1989…UTA flight 772, McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft (registered N54629), crashes in the Sahara Desert in Niger after a bomb explodes while enroute to Paris, killing all 170 on board. The bomb would eventually be blamed on Libyan terrorists.

---In 1994… Congress passed the FY95 defense authorization bill and added $100 million to bring three SR-71s out of storage. (Q)
