Ever been to...Kuwait.

Everything that would not belong anywhere else.

I drove across Wyoming a few years ago. I remember it being pretty desolate around Rock Springs... Hell, it was pretty desolate all the way across... {bugeye}

I stayed overnight in Evanston (???). It was a nice little town, and there were lots of trains...

I think I'd probably like it there better than I would in Kuwait, but if you can make enough cash to pay for your school, it might be a good opportunity...

Of importance to me is the duration of the stay. Kuwait would be 4 month with option to recontract, whereas Wyoming is less certain.

Both are good money for level of skill, knowledge, and age.

Keep in mind that I'm not 21 yet.

Wyoming is desolate pretty much all over, and despite what the locals say, the Wind River Range area IS windy.

The good thing would be the fishing...less people=less annoyance+better fishing.

And they are all married to each other.

I would have included the art gallery/power train photos, but they aren't uploaded yet. Will do it sometime today.

Anyway, I don't know much about trains, but this one was very cool.

Lucas, get your ass to Kuwait. I don't know what your travel experience is, but see the world... even the shitty parts of it. On top of that, $10k per month is a respectable load. I assume you will have some off time while away, so take advantage of the proximity of eastern Europe and Russia and even northern Africa.

Wow. That's either a very tall woman or a really small door. {boggled}

Yeah that. Read this though, but still go.

Thanks to everyone, and glad you liked them Mark. The dome car was amazingly nice. I'd love to rind one one day.

BAB, thanks for your post and thanks also to ShyFlyer. The door is indeed very short. In the picture with BNSF 5779, you can also see a very short door, which I think is only a tiny bit bigger.

Now, we'll see where this leads me. Hopefully to some nice money and fun adventures.

Prehospital emergency medical jobs.

And I don't know where I'll end up yet. I'll know within a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately, I'll have to take a semester off from Billings if I get either job. Kirtlye will be so upset.

Come to this thread a bit late having been out and about over the weekend.

What do I think about Kuwait? Well its just like any of the other little Arabian Gulf states - only one of the more boring ones. While the likes of Dubai are pretty hideous, they've got plenty to do in a glitzy, chintzy, kitsch bad taste sort of way. Kuwait is nowhere near that level yet - but don't think for a moment it will be full of old traditional Arabic culture and buildings either.

I've done a lot of work in that part of the world and the idea of living in any of them is a definite non-starter in my eyes. Abu Dhabi is probably the most agreeable for now (although it ain't great).

I have to say, the time of year you would be going is awful - summer in the Gulf is truly awful if you are having to work. I've been to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in July for work and its just stupidly hot. I like warm and sunny and a good bit of heat, but that's just ridiculous.

A VERY important question is whether they provide your accomodation or not. Be warned it can be an absolute nightmare if you have to do it yourself, and it is common in the Gulf States to pay a year's rent in advance due to the shortage of decent places. And if not, then hotels are also getting very very pricey. On the flipside, transport and food is cheap.

The other thing to be absolutely sure of is that all your paperwork for work permits and the like are completely sorted by your employers before you get there (or as much as possible). It can be a bureaucratic nightmare out there, and offices often get raided for people illegally working, and i've known respectable westerners to get kicked out. Not ideal.

But having said all that, if you have never lived and worked outside the US before then I would say do it. Even If its only for a short period, I think everyone should take the opportunity to live outside their home country for a bit. I did - in Germany and Hungary and it was some of the best times of my life. There's so much to see and learn, and at the very worst you come back appreciating your own country more !! Its also good for the CV - especially if you are doing a good sensible career-type job and not just working in a bar or similar.

Good schools, decent roads in Wyoming. Not like you're shopping for a home for a family though. Taxes are a bit...well...interesting.

Rock Springs though? That really is in the middle of nowhere. Sounds like your decision is going to suck either way.

Don't go to Russia. I had the misfortune of going there on the way over, and I'll have the misfortune of going again on the way back. Moscow is a big dirty city and the people are a bunch of drunks, the women are ugly (the only decent looking ones are whores), the food is bad....I can't say enough bad things. Stay away.

That say, with your pay you should be able to go to a number of exotic locales from Kuwait. The Seychelles come to mind. Lebanon. Oman.

Just stay away from Russia.

A little known secret that people have never figured out. Now just to get some actual businesses there besides oil and coal.

Thanks for the detailed reply. My housing, furnishing, and meals are all paid for. All documents will be filled out, too. What is getting food like down there if I decide to venture out and/or cook for myself? Also, are my power cables going to be OK or do I need anything special?

I've never worked outside the US, though Spicoli and Fluffy point out that Wyoming is pretty close to it. ;)

Also, as BAB and Spicoli et al point out, there are places close by to travel to. My friends have been to Russia, one went for one year. That one also is on his second year in Mongolia. Apparently Mongolia is a lot nicer, and, as he describes it, "also poor but much less f*#ked up."

I've always wanted to visit Seychelles, and, after getting to know a girl from Azerbaijan, I'd like to visit there, too, just for kicks.

Also, can I get a semi-cheap flight to Köln? I have a good friend there and I haven't seen her for years, though we talk all the time.

Oh, and Wyoming is absolutely fantastic for property taxes. ~9.0 fractional assessment value for your property? That's freaking amazing.

Interesting.

They just offered me a job in Evanston and not Rock Springs.

I'll have to see.

{laugh} That's almost worse, except that maybe you're an hour closer to SLC.

I'm not a huge fan of SLC...but I guess that will be the only option for flights. It's only 80 mostly interstate miles there, so that's an easy, easy drive.

Keep in mind that when I said it was a nice little town, I was only there from dinner time to breakfast time. From what I can remember the best part was the hot tub at the hotel was REALLY hot and felt great. I hate it when those things are only lukewarm...

Oh yeah, it snowed about six inches overnight, and that was during the last week in May. Kind of a novelty for me being from Florida. 8)
