Re-engined 737 poses production dilemmas
Lacking the means but not the desire, Boeing is setting aside the creation of its first advanced single-aisle transport of the 21st century in favor of a more conservative new engine 737. But even that relatively prosaic approach is not without manufacturing peril.

Air India surprised by Star rejection

Air India’s entry into Star Alliance has been delayed indefinitely after the airline alliance put on hold the Indian flag carrier’s application for a membership. The final decision on suspending Air India’s integration into the 27-airline alliance was made by Star’s executive board at a meeting in Frankfurt Sunday. A dejected Air India says it fulfilled all conditions of membership, but that is not how Star saw it.

Cuba approves flights from nine more US cities
Air travel between the United States and Cuba will become easier with the opening of charter flights to the forbidden island from an additional nine US cities announced by Cuba authorities. Cuban travel agency Havanatur Celimar said it added the cities of Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Baltimore, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas, Houston and San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the list from where charter flights would be accepted.

Guyana's Civil Aviation Authority, with assistance from the US National Transportation Safety Board and Trinidad and Tobago's CAA, is leading the inquiry into Saturday's Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800 runway overrun in Georgetown.

Korean Air orders two 737-900ERs; firms CSeries order
Korean Air placed a firm order for two additional Boeing 737-900ERs valued at $171.6 million at list prices. KE currently operates two 737-900ERs. Boeing Flight Services said it will partner with KE to provide 737NG training for KE pilots at the airline's Seoul Incheon flight training facility. The 737-900ER is designed to carry up to 180 passengers in a two-class layout.

Morocco awaits arrival of first F-16s
Morocco is set later this week to receive its first new fighter since 1981 with the arrival of four Lockheed Martin F-16s at Ben Guerrir Air Base. Lockheed confirmed on 1 August that Morocco's first four F-16 Block 52s, which are powered by Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engines, departed the final assembly centre in Fort Worth, Texas.

United Airlines introduced a new application for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users that will allow passengers to book reservations, check-in for flights, access mobile boarding passes, get updated flight status details and manage frequent flyer accounts.

Lufthansa Systems inked a five-year contract with Pegasus Airlines and subsidiary IZair to implement its Lido/Flight solution aimed at optimizing the carriers' flight planning processes.

EVA Airways contracted for ARINC's GLOBALink Satellite Communications service to enable enhanced connectivity for both its flights crews and passengers. The solution will offer higher bandwidth, allowing improved access to flight information for pilots and enabling inflight connectivity for passengers.

---In 1909... The first flying machine purchased and put into service by a government is the Wright Flyer. The US Army accepts its first airplane and pays the Wrights $25,000, plus a $5,000 bonus, because the machine exceeded the speed requirement of 40 mph.

---In 1911... The first woman in the United States licensed as a qualified pilot is Harriet Quimby, a drama critic.

---In 1917... Squadron leader E. H. Dunning of the British Royal Naval Air Service becomes the first pilot to land an airplane on the deck of a moving ship when he puts a Sopwith Pup down on HMS Furious.

---In 1964… The Tonkin Gulf Incident occurs. U.S. Navy aircraft are involved in skirmishes in the Gulf of Tonkin. F-8 Crusaders sink a North Vietnamese torpedo boat.

---In 1966…First flight of the Sukhoi Su-17 prototype Su-7IG.

---In 1985…Delta Air Lines 191, a Lockheed L-1011, On a Fort Lauderdale-Dallas/Fort Worth- Los Angeles route, the plane crashed due to severe microburst-induced wind shear. One civilian was killed as the plane crossed a highway. The crash would later become the subject of a television movie. Numerous changes to pilot wind shear training, weather forecasting, and wind shear detection were made as a result of this crash.

---In 2005… Air France Flight 358, an Airbus A340-300 (registration F-GLZQ) overshot the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport during a thunderstorm. The plane continued for 300 metres before coming to rest at the bottom of a ravine at the end of the runway adjacent to Highway 401. All 297 passengers and 12 crew survived but the plane was completely destroyed by fire. The investigation predominately blamed pilot error when faced with the severe weather conditions.
