New Feature: Portfolio

The place for site-related announcements and member feedback.

We're launching a new feature today: Portfolio - a way for you to highlight your best photos.

You'll need a First Class or Ultimate membership to use Portfolio.

By default, your user profile shows your last 25 uploads. With Portfolio, you can hand-pick which photos are shown. These photos appear in a larger, gallery-like presentation. You can see an example of this in my own profile.

I have First Class membership and I don't have a Portfolio!

Your Portfolio is empty until you add photos to it. If there are no photos in your Portfolio, your profile will show the usual latest-uploads thumbnails.

How do I add photos to my Portfolio?

Go to the photo you want to add. On the top right of the photo info box, you'll find a folder icon. Click it. You'll see a spinning icon for a moment, then the icon will change. Your photo is now added to your portfolio.

If you see that icon on a shot that isn't yours, please tell me!

How do I remove a photo from my Portfolio?

It's exactly the same as adding; just click the icon with the crossed-out folder.

What order do the photos appear in?

They're sorted by AvB score, then by number of loves, then by number of views. This is intended to bring the shots that our audience like the most to the top, even within the shots that you've hand-picked.

What happens if my First Class membership expires?

If your First Class membership expires, your Portfolio is locked; you won't be able to add or remove photos until you renew your First Class membership.

Your profile will revert to its default state, showing small thumbnails of your 25 most recent uploads.

However, if someone with First Class or Ultimate membership views your profile, they will see your Portfolio.

How many photos can I have in my Portfolio?

For now, there is no limit. You can have as many photos as you like.

We may restrict this in future, if it becomes necessary. Hopefully nobody adds all their photos! It's really meant to highlight the very best of your work; please use it responsibly.

What about Achievements?

You'll earn a silver Portfolio award when you add your first photo to your Portfolio.

Is that it?

For now, yes. We're looking at ways to feature Portfolios on the homepage, and we may do other things with them in future, but we wanted to get this out there and let you play with it.

Questions, comments, bug reports, drunken rants? Have at it.

A very nice addition. Not only does it make profiles look better but it makes me realise I really need to get the camera out again!
A million great ideas...

My profile doesn't have a Portfoloio or a means to add images to them? I do have First membership
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

The second explains the first, but that doesn't explain the second {duck}

You won't have a Portfolio until you add photos to it, and until then, your profile will look the same as it always did.

Adding photos, though, that should work. We did have some problem with the icon set being cached, meaning that the "add to Portfolio" icon didn't appear until the page had been refreshed. Can you Ctrl-reload one of your photo pages and see whether it appears - or hover your mouse immediately to the left of the icons you do have, and see whether you have a clickable blank space where the icon should be?

I'll either need to force an icon set reload for everyone, or dig deeper into the code, depending on what you see. One other First Class member has successfully created a Portfolio, so I suspect it's the icon set. Let me know what you try and what happens, and I'll go from there.

Ah, I read it as the portfolio being auto-populated with the AvB/Loves formula as my profile only shows the most recent uploads.

After a test the Portfolio button is there but hidden so a Ctrl+Reload has made it appear {thumbsup}

From merzbrueck's Portfolio... Government 787 AND a sick-looking 727?! Wait... I'm sure I didn't code it so portrait shots would look like that... And how the hell did it end up with two watermarks?! {nut}
