As I get older, I really enjoy stripped down music. Give me some music on real instruments with real songwriters and no BS. I first heard Nick Drake on the Royal Tenenbaum's soundtrack, and while I loved Fly, I never bothered to investigate his other songs. Out of his 3 1/2 albums he made before his supposed suicide, there is some wonderful stuff.

I just bought his Fruit Tree compilation.

Turns out, there's a band living next door to me. Today, they're filming a video and they asked me to be in it. They wanted to shovel my driveway and catch it on camera. Here's an example of their music. They play in the St. Paul/Minneapolis venues.

From my Russian friends, Leonid Vorobyev and Sergey Kashirin. I asked them to record this next about five months ago and they just got the final mixing done yesterday.

I don't care if you don't like heavy music. This double-bass drum and matching guitar riffage is just spectacular:

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters is known to bring a person from the audience up on stage during concerts to play along during a song. Most strum a few chords, then hand the guitar back to Grohl in panic. Last night in Austin, he called this guy up on stage. It's really good. The fan has been identified as Yayo Sanchez. Brought a smile to my face. Contains language.

It certainly is. If only the 'singer' would shut up... ;)

I actually do like heavy music, especially if everybody in the band seems to know what they are doing. Bonus if they seem to enjoy doing it.

Like these guys here:

I've only recently been introduced to DragonForce, but I'm very tempted to call their 2014 album "Maximum Overload" my personal most favourite metal album ever.

It will also quite likely be the reason for my untimely end if I keep listening to it while driving a car... {boxed}

That's good stuff, added to FB, I work with some Dr.s in JNB who would appreciate it.

I still love Weird Al's Yoda though.

Dream Theater's new album Distance over Time. It's fantastic.

Not the best song on the album, but the first single:

Interestingly, I met Herman Li (one of Dragonforce's guitarists) a few weeks ago. My wife is friends with his girlfriend, so we were at a get-together at their house recently.

Nice guy. I made sure I actually listened to some of their music before we went (though I also made sure I didn't talk about music while there (because once I start, I don't stop)). They're certainly talented, and I like some of the songs. "The Edge of the World" in particular is a great song.

And I especially didn't mention my distaste of the band name.

An eclectic collective who are pretty much a staple of the sailing community, LAIKIPIA are another group deserving of far more recognition than they receive:

Hadn't really heard of them but 'the bird' toured with Michael Andrews some years ago and does a brilliant cover of College & the Electric Youth's 'Real Hero'. That is one unmistakable voice!
