I've been a coin collector since 1966 when my mom gave me a 1928 dime that she found in a roll of dimes that she got from the bank. I still have it.

Over the years, I've become pretty good at judging which modern US Mint products will be collectable and will appreciate in value. Some of their products reward me with profit. Some lose value quickly. Regardless, collecting coins is slow and boring.

However, there's a new thing in the realm of numismatics and it's called VaultBox. VaultBox is a product of the Numismatic Guaranty Company, one of the two most-reputable coin grading and certification companies in the USA. NGC is offering 3-coin "kits" containing graded, certified, encapsulated collector coins for $739. For that money, a buyer is essentially guaranteed to make his money back in the sale of the 3 coins. It's a no-lose thing. Yesterday, I witnessed an excited gentleman open his VaultBox to find that one of his three coins was a $20 gold piece worth at least $5000.

I might have to invest in one of those VaultBoxes. Just once. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until Series 3 comes out. The Series 2 boxes went on sale three days ago and they've already sold out.

Yesterday, I gave a family friend a ride to an eye doctor appointment. She knew I was a coin collector and, instead of slipping me $10 for gas, she gave me a Ziplock snack bag of coins.

There were 18 coins. Nine of them were silver American and Canadian dimes. Eight of them were spendable dateless Buffalo nickels and Canadian nickels.

Amazingly, one of them was an 1852 gold dollar coin. It's worth $315 in coin collector value and $135 in scrap gold value. She knew it was in the bag. Whoa.

Nice.
And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen
