So not really a bar per se, but just an area when the guys come over we can relax and I can make a few (dozen :)) ) rounds. im going over what I need booze wise, and have the usuals down, but anything I should pick up? tools? Specific glassware?

A shaker, a strainer, a blender, a jigger, a bar spoon, a muddler, an ice bucket.

Glassware, shot glasses, snifters, tumblers, wine glasses... Too much?

Rum, Scotch, vodka, gin, bourbon, brandy, Angostura bitters,mixers...
And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen

Whiskey too. Peppermint Schnapps, olives, onions, lemon, lime, swizzle sticks . . . . .

Perfect, thank you gentlemen. As for the bourbon, I personally hate Jack, and my bourbon drinking friend insists on Woodford or Walker Black.

For all of my spirits, I hate the cheap crap. Should I buy a decent brand to use for mixed drinks and straight up or just use the good stuff for special occasions, etc? Ie: Mr.Boston vodka is disgusting. Hell, Smirnoff isnt even good enough for me. In my freezer now I have Skyy (good for shots) and Three Olives, perfect for white russians and martinis.

I dislike the cheap stuff as well. I am a big fan of Bombay Saphire gin. I have several bourbons, Jack is one of them; I like the Single Barrel Jack, the Woodbridge, Knob Creek and Maker's Mark. As for Scotch, I have Johnny Black for those that aren't REAL Scotch drinkers, my stash has MacAllan 18 y, Dalwhinie 12y, Talisker 10Y, Laphroaig (12Y???) and Johnny Green and Blue. That is kept away from the rank and file uncouth dilettantes.

A good selection of beer is good too. I am not that big a beer drinker, my forte is wines.

Blasphemy I say!!! :o

:))

Your bourbon drinking friend knows Walker Black is Scotch (if he's thinking what I think) doesn't he/she?

Schmirnoff is good if your going to use it with a heavy mix - bloody mary mix for example. Straight outta the bottle - frozen of course - Skyy is decent.

Mr. Boston Vodka sound like that crap on the bottom shelf of every Army Class 6 store called "Military Special", and sells for US$6 a 1/2 Gal. Gasoline would be better.

Bottom line. Don't serve crap. People will be able to tell . . . especially lushes like me.

This is my rundown:

Vodka: Three Olives, maybe some flavoured ones for girly drinks.
Gin: Tanqueray (stuff is heavenly)
Bourbon: none yet, probably walker red or black or just some JD just to get something people know in there. (Edit, Walker is not Bourbon, thanks Pep!)
Scotch: dewars
Tequila: none, its crap.
Rum: Captain and Bacardi

Yes, he is a huge bourbon and scotch man. He knows the difference, I dont. As for Jack, I've just never liked it, vodka and gin is my love. And yes, Mr.Boston is terrible. It's like $9.99 for a half gallon. Its vile. My company sells a crap ton of it too.

Bourbon is made in the US - only. And in Kentucky, Tennessee generally. Names for Bourbon County kentucky. It's charcoal filtered. Scotch is made in - well, Scotland. And it's Whisky, not whiskey. Note there are many types of Scotch. All have a different flavor. I prefer darker scotches with a little peat flavor. Whiskeys like Canadian Club for example are a blend.

Here's some wiki pages that explain it better than I.

So long story short, they are ALL whisky, just different variations therein? Or am I still as lost as ever?

My friend made a little bar in his living room from a left over cabinet and a small piece of granite countertop. He put a little double sink in the top as well and made an area to the side for a smaller Costco $150 refigerator. He keeps the bottles in a separate cabinet above along with one of those inverted glass racks. He keeps ice in one side of the sink during parties and beers, coke, olives, etc in the refigerator. Everything that you need is tucked away in a small 6' area against the wall.

He is also fighting with his wife to let him put a pool table in the same area.
