FlightGlobal's obituary is an interesting read. He almost single handedly saved the Harrier program, though it is a shame that parliament conceded just before he rocked up outside Westminster in a prototype - that would have been something to see.

Over 80 of the 100+ types he flew were prototype/experimental aircraft. It takes a special kind of crazy to find your vocation flying unproven aircraft. Clear skies sir.

I was lucky enough to meet him a few times as he was patron of a local aviation group i go to and gave a few lectures there. Glad i have a signed copy of his book "A view from the Hover" as it is a fascinating read.
