A US Navy aircraft carrying 11 crew and passengers has crashed into the sea off the coast of Japan.

The cause of crash is unknown and the names those onboard are being withheld while next of kin are notified, the US Navy said in a statement.

The aircraft was en route to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan in the Philippine Sea.

The only C-2s in the region are VRC-30 out of Atsugi... and there are only a handful of them. It's a very small community.

Three are missing. The rest have been rescued and transported to the USS Reagan.
And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen

Looks like eight have been rescued so far. The one thing the missing three have in their favour is that the sea temps out there are warm enough to survive for a substantial length of time.

Reading one article that mentions this is the first serious Greyhound incident in 44 years, which seems remarkable considering the risky nature of its missions. Must be some top-drawer pilots flying C-2s.
A million great ideas...

The C-2 does indeed have a spectacular safety record for a carrier aircraft. The E-2, which shares the same engines and propellers has had a couple of incidents where a prop failed to feather after an inflight engine shutdown. I would hate to see this demon has followed to the C-2 series.
