Nepal strengthens flight safety guidelines after recent crash
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has announced guidelines to enhance flight safety in the country, following the crash of a Tara Air turboprop aircraft on May 29, 2022.
Addressing complex geographical and climatic conditions, the aviation authority said that airlines will have to suspend operations in case of bad weather conditions.
The authority also added that airlines will have to collect weather information and submit it to the ATS [Air Traffic Service - ed. note] Reporting office. The flight plan could only be approved by the office, CAAN added.
The guidelines also included a proposal by the CAAN, which would make it mandatory for no less than two pilots to fly a single-engine aircraft.

Southwest Airlines invests in sustainable aviation fuel project
Southwest Airlines has announced an investment into SAFFiRE Renewables, LLC (SAFFiRE), a company formed by D3MAX, LLC (D3MAX), as part of a Department of Energy (DOE)-backed project to develop and produce scalable, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Funded with a DOE grant matched by Southwest’s investment, SAFFiRE is expected to utilize technology developed by the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to convert corn stover, a widely available waste feedstock in the U.S., into renewable ethanol that then would be upgraded into SAF.
In 2021, the DOE awarded D3MAX the only pilot-scale grant for SAF production, with a goal to scale technology that could commercialize SAF. According to NREL, this could produce significant quantities of cost-competitive SAF that could provide an 84 percent reduction in carbon intensity compared to conventional jet fuel on a lifecycle basis.

Iberia to use SAF on several long-haul flights
In a move to make international travel more sustainable, Spanish carrier Iberia will use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on some of their long-haul flights.
On June 1, 2022, Iberia operated its first long-haul flight between Madrid and Washington DC using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft (registration EC-MKI) partly powered by SAF. The biofuel was produced from waste at the Petronor refinery.
The airline will also use SAF on routes to Dallas and San Francisco. Both flights will deploy the Airbus A330-200 aircraft. The use of biofuels in these three flights will reduce CO2 emissions by 125 tons, according to the airline.

Turkey gifts Lithuanians Bayraktar TB2 for Ukraine
In a surprising twist, Turkey will offer a Bayraktar TB2 armed drone for Lithuanians to give to Ukraine.
In late May 2022, Lithuanians had raised €5.9 million in less than four days to offer a TB2 drone for the Ukrainian armed forces. The crowdfunding was an initiative of local media channel Laisves TV.
On June 2, 2022, Laisves TV founder Andrius Tapinas announced that Turkey would instead gift the aircraft for Lithuanians to offer to Ukraine. This emerged after a meeting of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense with its Turkish counterpart.
Consequently, €1.5 million of the money collected will still be transferred to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense to acquire additional weaponry for the TB2.
