Reports from Italian newspaper Il Messaggero suggest that Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) may be looking to take a 15% - 40% stake in ITA Airways.

Virgin Australia to reduce capacity by 25% amid Omicron spread
Virgin Australia has cut a quarter of flights for the rest of January and February 2022 as the rise in Omicron cases disrupts availability of employees and crew in the country. Low travel demand is also another factor in the airline’s decision to reduce its capacity.
The airline has suspended nine domestic routes as well as its sole international service to Fiji, and reduced the number of flights on some other routes.
“Virgin Australia is dedicated to the communities that we serve and will resume these flights as soon as possible,” Virgin (VAH) chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said in a statement.

Passenger figures at Avinor’s airports increased by 10 per cent in 2021
The largest growth was at Bergen Airport (BGO), which increased from 2.7 million passengers in 2020 to 3.2 million in 2021. Oslo Airport (OSL) saw a four per cent increase for 2021 overall compared to 2020, from nine million to 9.4 million travellers.
“These are still very challenging times for aviation, with a lot of uncertainty about further development of the pandemic,” said CEO of Avinor, Abraham Foss. “Although we are seeing an increase in the number of passengers and aircraft movements, we have seen a sharp decline in both traffic revenues and commercial revenues for the year in total, as a result of fewer passengers and aircraft movements.”

How COVID-19 has shaped the start of a new year for Hamburg Airport
After months of stagnation, first signs of a recovery were seen at Hamburg Airport (HAM) from summer 2021. Traffic figures rose steadily, reaching a high point during the autumn holiday season. But aviation is still a long way from normality. As the fourth COVID-19 wave began, passenger figures sank again, resulting in traffic figures of around 5.32 passengers in 2021, below expectations. Despite these challenging circumstances, the airlines maintained, and in some cases even extended, the variety within the Hamburg route network. Nevertheless, the effects of the pandemic are also shaping the start of the new year.

Germany reconsiders the F-35 to replace the Tornado
The new German coalition government is reportedly considering the Lockheed Martin F-35A as a possible replacement for the nuclear-capable Panavia Tornado.
The Panavia Tornado strike aircraft, which entered service in the 1970s, is the designated aircraft of the Luftwaffe to carry the 20 US-made B61 nuclear bombs stockpiled in Germany as part of NATO nuclear sharing. However, since 2017, the German Air Force has been looking for an apt successor for the aging Tornado, which is now even too old to participate in NATO missions.
