UK and NATO rush to recover F-35B wreckage before Russia
On November 17, 2021, a Lockheed Martin F-35B crashed in the Mediterranean Sea as it was operating off the British aircraft carrier HMS Queen-Elizabeth. The pilot managed to eject from the aircraft in time and was later recovered.
Fearing that a competing nation such as Russia could recover critical technology, the United Kingdom and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) partners are now rushing to recover the wreckage.
"We'll get it first, I promise you," said General Simon Doran, the representative of the United States Marine Corps within the United Kingdom Carrier Strike, to AFP.

FAA proposes $341,893 fine against 93 Air for alleged illegal charter operations
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed a $341,893 civil penalty against Nebraska-based 93 Air for allegedly conducting illegal charter flights.
In a statement dated November 19, 2021, the FAA claims that for almost a year (October 2018 to September 2019), 93 Air conducted approximately 32 paid passenger-carrying flights in a single-engine Pilatus PC-12/45 without the required air carrier certificate or operations specifications that outline what the company is authorized to do.

Iran's Mahan Air sustains cyberattack, data leaked
Mahan Air, Iran’s second largest airline, has sustained a serious cyberattack.
The incident occurred on November 21, 2021. The airline’s website was down for some time, and customers received messages from the hackers, Iranian media reports.
Mahan Air acknowledged the attacks, and stated that the problems have been dealt with and subsequent flights will continue according to the schedule.
Taking to Twitter, the airline said: “This is considered a normal occurrence. Mahan Cybersecurity Team has always acted intelligently and in a timely manner, and has thwarted these attacks.”

FAA to impose $161,823 fine for alcohol-related incidents and unruly behaviour
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed $161,823 in civil penalties against eight airline passengers for alleged unruly behavior involving alcohol.
In a statement released on November 22, 2021, the FAA said that it had received nearly 300 reports of passenger disturbances due to alcohol and intoxication since January 1, 2021.
In August 2021, FAA administrator Steve Dickson wrote a letter to airport leaders advising them that as the number of passengers traveling has increased, so has the number of unruly and unsafe behavior incidents on planes and in airports.

Southwest Airlines employee killed while leaving work at El Paso Airport
A Southwest Airline employee was found dead at the El Paso International Airport (ELP) employee parking lot on the evening of November 19, 2021.
The El Paso Police department responded to calls that evening and sent a dispatch to the employee parking lot. Initial reports suggested that the incident was aggravated robbery and that the unidentified worker was fatally shot.
The police department, however, released a statement on social media saying that through ongoing investigation, it found that this was not a result of robbery, and that no shooting took place.

Air Transat launches a virtual interlining service: connectair by Air Transat
Air Transat has announced the launch of its new connectair by Air Transat service. Using this virtual interlining platform, travelers can now combine Air Transat flights with flights from partner airlines such as easyJet and Avianca to travel to even more destinations in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Additional partners will gradually join the platform to enrich the range of destinations.

American Airlines, JetBlue ask court to throw out U.S. antitrust suit
WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Reuters) - American Airlines (AAL.O) and JetBlue Airways Corp (JBLU.O) asked a U.S. judge on Monday to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department and six states over the company's "Northeast Alliance" partnership.
The suit filed in September alleges the deal would lead to higher fares in busy northeastern U.S. airports and seeks to unwind the alliance. The airlines said Monday the alliance has been in place for nine months but the suit does "not allege that it has caused a single higher price, any reduction in quality or the slightest reduction in output."

Southwest Airlines commits $10 Million to Yale University to support climate change initiatives
Southwest Airlines has announced a $10 million commitment to Yale University’s Center for Natural Carbon Capture (YCNCC) to research technological advancements and find new solutions to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions. The pledge will also support research and educational efforts at the Yale School of the Environment to explore the current state of sustainability, strategy, policy, and economics, emphasizing trends related to the aviation industry and focusing on finding new ways to reduce atmospheric carbon.

AirAsia Group reports a loss in the third quarter, launches Teleport
The Consolidated Group posted 3Q2021 revenue of RM296 million, lower by 37% year-on-year (“YoY”) and 20% quarter-on-quarter (“QoQ”). Aviation revenue declined 70% YoY and 37% QoQ as travel demand was constrained by limited available flights caused by the lockdown imposed in Malaysia, since January 2021. Digital businesses reported stronger revenue, up 141% YoY led by contributions from Teleport, which tripled its revenue YoY driven by strategic growth in its cargo network.

Eurowings to fly to four new destinations in Northern Europe starting in December

Ryanair boss predicts ‘fraught’ Christmas period for European aviation
A fourth wave of COVID-19 across Europe is going to make for tough times for the region’s airlines, Ryanair Group chief executive Michael O’Leary predicted.
“Up until last weekend, things were going great,” the outspoken chief executive said in an interview broadcast by Eurocontrol on November 23, 2021.
Ryanair has recovered more strongly than any other carrier in Europe. Eurocontrol data shows that Ryanair operated 2,102 flights in the week of November 16-22, 2021, up 7% on 2019 levels. Among low-cost rivals, easyJet operated 43% fewer flights while Wizz Air’s flights were 20% lower than the same period in 2019.

20 million passengers expected during Thanksgiving holiday period in U.S.
The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen about 20 million people between Friday and Nov. 28, almost back to 2019 levels. Many of those travelers skipped Thanksgiving trips last year as Covid cases were rising and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised against travel during the holiday.
Both Delta Air Lines and United Airlines said the Sunday after Thanksgiving could be their busiest day since before the pandemic. The airlines forecast this week that between Nov. 19 and Nov. 30, they will fly at least 5.6 million and 4.5 million travelers, respectively.

DXB to welcome 1.8m passengers in the next 11 days
Dubai Airports has issued a passenger advisory alerting travelers about Dubai International (DXB) getting exceptionally busy over the coming days and weeks. According to the operator, as many as 1.8 million passengers are expected to pass through DXB between November 25 and December 5 with average daily traffic reaching 164,000 passengers. December 4 is expected to be the busiest day during this period with passenger numbers likely to surpass the 190,000 mark.

Nashville International Airport is the first to attain pet-friendly designation
Nashville International Airport (BNA) has become the first to attain the new pet-friendly designation, Better Cities For Pets™ programme, launched by Mars Petcare. The announcement, in time for the holiday travel rush, comes in response to a rising demand for pet-friendly travel options, as a recent survey shows 85 per cent of pet parents are likely to travel within the next year, and 65 per cent saying they would like to bring their pets along. Following the company’s recently launched partnership with Hilton’s Homewood Suites, the new Airport Certification aims to accommodate the growing desire from pet parents to travel with their dogs and cats, and encourage other airports to make the travel experience more welcoming to both people and their pets.

MQ-25 conducts ground testing ahead of aircraft carrier trial
Boeing and the US Navy conducted ground testing of the MQ-25 Stingray tanker drone at Naval Station Norfolk Chambers Field in Virginia, United States.
After completing several refueling trials this year, which includes an F-35C Lightning II fighter and an E-2D Hawkeye command and control aircraft, the MQ-25 T1 test asset developed by Boeing will be moving on to the evaluation of its deck handling capability.
The behavior of the drone was tested with lines painted on the runway of Chambers Field to simulate a carrier deck environment.

NASA delays launch of Webb telescope after preparation incident
NASA has delayed the launch of the James Webb space telescope after an incident during launch preparations meant further testing was required.
NASA said the launch readiness date will now be no earlier than December 22, 2021. It was previously scheduled to launch on December 18, 2021 on an Arianespace Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou, French Guiana.
Technicians at the satellite preparation facility in Kourou were preparing to attach Webb to the launch vehicle adapter when the incident happened.

Private contractor acquires Qatari Mirage 2000s to train French Air Force
A French private company, ARES (Advanced REDAIR European Squadron), acquired 12 Qatar Mirage 2000 fighters to provide training to fighter pilots of the French Navy, the French newspaper Les Echos reports.
Much like the United States Air Force that recently awarded $6.4 billion worth of contracts for private adversary training, European air forces are in need of more combat training than can be generated internally.
The European Defence Agency evaluated the European air forces’ needs at around 22,000 flight hours over five years, a potential market of €300 million. The French Air Force and Naval Aviation are no exception to this rule.
