Bulgarian MiG-29 crashes at sea during Shabla 2021 exercise
A Bulgarian Air Force MiG-29 crashed into the Black Sea while taking part in the Shabla 21 training exercise on June 9, 2021.
“A MiG-29 aircraft of the Bulgarian Air Force lost radio communication and disappeared from the radars at 00:45,” reported the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence in a statement.
A search and rescue operation was launched and is still ongoing at the time this article is published.

Boeing overshadows Airbus with 73 aircraft orders in May 2021
The latest figures show that regarding aircraft orders, Boeing ended May 2021 better than Airbus. The American aircraft manufacturer registered a total of 73 aircraft orders, overshadowing Airbus’ results, which disclosed only seven aircraft orders.
Boeing 737 MAX aircraft family accounted for the largest part of overall orders. In May 2021, the gross orders comprised 61 Boeing 737 MAX, including the latest order of 34 737 MAX aircraft from Southwest Airlines (LUV).

China to inaugurate “world’s fastest” hypersonic wind tunnel
Like the United States and Russia, China has a keen interest in hypersonic weapons. In order to submit its prototypes to the aerodynamic conditions of hypersonic flight, researchers rely on wind tunnels.
Since 2012, China already operates the JF-12, which offers conditions similar to Mach 5-9 range speed. But to achieve even greater speeds, the Chinese Academy of Sciences began the construction of an even more powerful facility in 2018.

Ryanair welcomes EU Court ruling on Condor state aid
Ryanair today welcomed the EU General Court’s annulment of the European Commission’s approval of State aid by Germany to Condor. In April 2020, the German government granted a €550m loan to Condor, which had already benefited from a €380m rescue loan from Germany in 2019 following the bankruptcy of its parent company, Thomas Cook.

easyJet opens a new seasonal base in Malaga
Ahead of the summer season, easyJet on June 8 inaugurated its new seasonal base at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which will allow the carrier to better respond to an increase in demand due to different European countries progressively re-opening for tourism. The new base, operational since June 1, adds to those that easyJet already has in Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca and consolidates the company’s presence in Spain, an ever-growing market for the airline.

Finnair reports a slight uptick in passenger traffic in May
In May, Finnair carried 82,800 passengers, which was 210.4% more than in May 2020. The COVID-19 impact was clearly visible already then as Finnair operated only a minimum network due to strict and extensive travel restrictions. The number of passengers in May 2021 was 2.3% more than in April 2021 (month-on-month figures are not fully comparable as there is one day less in April compared to May).

Southwest exercises 34 options for the new Boeing 737-7 MAX 7s
Southwest Airlines has announced it will exercise 34 options into firm orders for the Boeing 737-7 MAX 7. This brings the firm total to 234 aircraft.
In addition, Southwest also has 149 Boeing 737-8 MAX 8 on order through 2031.
The company will use the new aircraft to retire older 737s.

Gol to acquire regional carrier MAP Linhas Aéreos
GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes S.A. has announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire MAP Transportes Aéreos Ltda. (MAP Linhas Aéreos), a Brazilian domestic airline with flight routes to regional destinations and São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport.
The acquisition reflects the Company’s on-going commitment to expanding the demand for passenger air transportation in Brazil and what its Management perceives to be an unparalleled market opportunity for rational consolidation in the Brazilian aviation market, as the country’s economy recovers from Covid-19.

Ryanair to double its presence in Rome Fiumicino this summer
Ryanair has announced the addition of three based Boeing 737-800 aircraft, six new routes and over 65 flights every week from Rome Fiumicino to a host of domestic and international destinations.
Ryanair remains committed to delivering connectivity to Rome and expects its Summer ’21 schedule, including 78 routes from both Rome airports in total and over 470 departing flights per week.

Pakistan International Airlines eyes aircraft fleet revamp
The government-owned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plans to gradually revamp its aging aircraft fleet by inducting non-specified narrow-body planes as well as returning twin-turboprops ATR-72, which had been previously acquired by the air carrier under a lease agreement.
Speaking in a live session held on the official Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) social media page on June 8, 2021, Chief Executive Officer Arshad Malik hinted that the air carrier planned to implement its new business plan during the next three months.

AirAsia’s logistic arm to launch first dedicated freighter in Q3
Malaysian based low-cost carrier AirAsia is set to operate its first dedicated cargo aircraft through its logistics arm Teleport. The airline has announced that a fleet of a dedicated Boeing 737-800F and two converted AirAsia Airbus A320 passenger-to-freighter aircraft will launch operations from Teleport’s hub in Bangkok in Q3 2021.
The fleet route network will operate to and from Teleport’s long-haul markets, mainly between China, India, and Southeast Asia.

Boeing seeks delay and higher price for future Air Force One
Boeing warned the United States Air Force it would be a year late on delivery of the two future Air Force One presidential aircraft and asked to renegotiate the contract price.
Since 2007, the USAF is studying a possible replacement for the two VC-25A aircraft, the heavily modified Boeing 747 currently used as the main air transportation for the President of the United States. In January 2015, it announced that they would be replaced by two new 747-8s. In July 2018, Boeing received a $3.9 billion contract to convert the two aircraft to the Air Force One standards, with a delivery set for December 2024.

South Korea grounds KF-16 fleet after takeoff incident
A Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) pilot was forced to eject from his KF-16 fighter during a takeoff run on June 8, 2021. As a result, the whole KF-16 fleet was grounded.
The KF-16 belonged to the 20th Fighter Wing. The incident took place at Seosan Air Base (HMY) in western South Korea. During the takeoff run, the pilot detected unspecified problems with his aircraft and chose to eject. The fighter jet sustained damages but the pilot was uninjured.
