ATR eyes Chinese customers; applies for aircraft certification
ATR is expecting to find operators for its aircraft in China, despite the country’s long history as a difficult market for foreign suppliers of turboprop airliners. 
The Franco-Italian turboprop manufacturer has applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for ATR 72-600 airworthiness certification. China has previously operated earlier versions of the ATR 72.

Ethiopian crash likely to aggravate unease over 737 Max
Loss of the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8, just a few minutes after take-off, is likely to stir disquiet over the re-engined type which emerged during the probe into a Lion Air Max 8 accident.
Ethiopian Airlines has five Max 8s in its fleet and the aircraft involved (ET-AVJ) was only delivered to the carrier in mid-November last year.

Some fast answers needed on second MAX crash
It is not the air transport industry’s habit to rush accident investigations, for good reason. But in the case of Sunday’s crash of an Ethiopian Boeing 737 MAX 8, there is pressure to get at least some answers as soon as possible.
All 157 crew and passengers on the Ethiopian aircraft were killed after it crashed minutes after takeoff on what should have been a routine flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi. According to Ethiopian’s CEO, the pilot—an experienced captain with more than 8,000 hours—issued a distress call and requested clearance to return to the airport.

No question of cancelling Paris air show public days: GIFAS
Organisers of the Paris air show have no intention of matching Farnborough’s cancellation of weekend public display flying, insisting that such a measure has never been considered.
Farnborough’s next air show in 2020 will be cut to a five-day trade-focused event after its management company axed the traditional two-day open session attended by enthusiasts and spectators.

United encourages Boeing to speed up NMA development
United Airlines chief executive Oscar Munoz wants Boeing to speed up the development of its proposed New Mid-market Airplane.
"Dennis [Muilenburg, chief executive of Boeing] and I talk about this all the time – speed up the process, we're growing, we need aircraft and they make great aircraft," Munoz told reporters on the sidelines of the US Chamber of Commerce Aviation summit on 7 March. "Having it in a little bit shorter timeframe would be helpful."

Air Lease emerges as customer for four more A350s
US lessor Air Lease has emerged as the customer behind an order for four Airbus A350s previously attributed to an unidentified client.
Airbus had disclosed the order – for three A350-900s and a single -1000 – in December last year.

BREAKING: No survivors from Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 crash
An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 has crashed en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, with no survivors among the 157 people onboard.
Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed that there are no survivors from flight ET302, which crashed March 10 with 149 passengers and eight crew onboard.

Ethiopian CEO: Crashed 737 MAX 8 issued a distress call
The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 that crashed on the morning of March 10 had issued a distress call,  according to comments made by Ethiopian Airlines group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam.
"From the air traffic control records, the pilot said that he was having difficulties and wanted to return. He was given clearance to return to Addis," Gebremariam said, speaking at a press conference in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian accident involves four-month old 737 Max
Ethiopian Airlines has identified as a newly-delivered Boeing 737 Max 8 the aircraft involved in an accident while en route to Nairobi.
The aircraft (ET-AVJ) had been operating the ET302 service to the Kenyan capital when it lost contact at 08:44, having departed just six minutes earlier at 08:38, states the airline.

Ethiopian Airlines Crash Kills at Least 150; 2nd Brand-New Boeing to Go Down in Months
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — A jetliner with passengers from at least 35 countries crashed Sunday shortly after leaving Ethiopia’s capital, killing all 157 people on board and renewing concerns about the new model of aircraft involved in the accident, the popular Boeing 737 Max 8.
After taking off from Addis Ababa in good weather and with clear visibility, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, bound for Nairobi, Kenya, struggled to ascend at a stable speed, according to flight data published by FlightRadar24. The pilot sent out a distress call and was cleared to return to the airport, Bole International, the airline’s chief executive told reporters.

No survivors from Laser DC-3 crash in Colombia
Colombian authorities have disclosed that none of the 14 occupants of a Douglas DC-3 have survived after the aircraft crashed during a domestic service to Villavicencio.
The aircraft, which departed San Jose del Guaviare on 9 March, declared an emergency at around 10:40, states the Colombian aviation regulator Aeronautica Civil.

JAL names new LCC Zipair; plans two international routes
Japan Airlines (JAL) has officially established its new medium- to long-haul LCC and has also revealed the first international routes it will launch in 2020. JAL confirmed the name of the LCC will be Zipair Tokyo Co. Ltd., although the proposed name had been rumored last month. Zipair also applied to Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for its air operator’s certificate (AOC) on March 8.

Air Transat 737-800 makes emergency landing at Newark after reports of fire
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey briefly closed its runways March 9 after the pilot of an Air Transat Boeing 737-800 requested an emergency landing because of reports of smoke or fire in the aircraft’s cargo hold.
Air Transat flight 942 diverted to EWR while en route from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale, landing on Runway 4R at 8:28 a.m. local time. Firefighters responded to the aircraft, and passengers evacuated to the runway via emergency slides, the FAA said.

SWISS returns first refurbished A340-300 to revenue service
Lufthansa Group subsidiary Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) operated its first Airbus A340-300 with a completely refurbished interior on its first revenue flight from Zurich, Switzerland to Japan’s Tokyo Narita on March 7.
All of SWISS’s five A340s should be given a nose-to-tail cabin refurbishment by summer.

Swedish carrier Braathens to include emissions compensation in tickets
Swedish regional carrier Braathens Regional Airlines (BRA) plans to automatically include “climate compensation” for all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its flights in its ticket prices, from April 1.
In 2018, BRA gave passengers the opportunity to choose fossil-free biofuel when booking tickets.

The aircraft, registration G-BNLY, was ferried to London Heathrow this morning ahead of its service-entry later today to Miami operating BA211.

Dulles fortunes turn on lower costs as United maps growth
United Airlines could double the number of flights it operates from Washington Dulles International airport, putting the once questionable hub on firmer and firmer footing.
Ankit Gupta, vice-president of domestic network planning at the Chicago-based carrier, told investors at an Evercore conference during the week of 4 March that United is considering adding two to four new flight banks at Dulles – an increase that could amount to doubling its current four-bank schedule.

Air Senegal has taken delivery of its first Airbus A330-900neo.
Equipped with 32 seats in business class, 21 in "premium plus" and 237 in economy class, the Rolls-Royce Trent 7000-powered aircraft is to be operated on the African carrier's Paris route from Dakar and to other medium and long-haul destinations, says Airbus.

Air Baltic to start in-house A220 C-checks in 2019
Air Baltic has decided to establish in-house base maintenance capabilities as the Latvian carrier moves to an all-Airbus A220 fleet.
The airline plans to recruit some 50 technicians to start C-checks for the twinjets later this year, it says.

Philippines Airlines (PAL) could be leaning towards SkyTeam as its possible global alliance of choice.
During a keynote interview at Routes Asia in Cebu this week, PAL VP sales Ryan Uy talked about the pros and cons of alliance options. PAL remains one of the few legacy flag carriers that is not a member of one of the three major global alliances.

Swedan's Airports report february decline in passenger traffic
A total of 2.79 million passengers passed through Swedavia's 10 Swedish airports in February – 4% down on the same month a year ago.
Passenger numbers fell 3% at Stockholm Arlanda and Göteborg Landvetter, although the smaller gateways of Visby and Luleå fared better, reporting monthly increases of 3% and 2% respectively.

New ePassport gates launched at border control in Cardiff Airport
The latest ePassport gates, funded by the Welsh Government, will permit travellers with biometric passports to bypass manual inspections, allowing quicker entry into Wales.
Although Cardiff International Airport Ltd (CIAL) was one of the first airports in the UK to introduce e-gate technology, the three original gates were removed by the UK Border Force in 2017 as the initial technology was superseded.

A Japanese delegation led by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is looking to elevate the profiles of Japan’s smaller regional airports.
“These airports have small budgets, so we want to promote them by bringing them under the JNTO umbrella,” Yuri Nishiyama of JNTO’s global projects section said during the Routes Asia event in Cebu this week.

ANALYSIS: How RAF's Tornados made storming contribution
Forty years after the type’s introduction to service with the UK, the Royal Air Force’s last Panavia Tornado strike aircraft have made their final operational flights and headed for retirement.
A milestone sortie conducted from the RAF’s Marham base in Norfolk on 28 February marked the last outing for the Cold ­War-era stalwart, which had until a month earlier been involved in deployed combat duties almost continually since 1991.
