American Airlines anticipates growth in margin, TRASM
American Airlines' expected total revenue per available seat mile for the second quarter could rise by as much as 5.5% according to the airline. American's pretax margin could reach 14% for the period.

UPS installing flat-panel cockpit displays in 757s, 767s
UPS will add large-screen cockpit displays to 26 Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft, matching the display style of the 787. The upgrade will do away with old cathode ray tubes.

LAX shuffles airlines in bid to improve customer experience
Los Angeles International Airport is shuffling locations among 21 airlines in a bid to improve the customer experience. As part of this project, Hawaiian Airlines is moving from Terminal 2 to Terminal 5. "We look forward to providing our guests an improved, more efficient and comfortable airport experience in our major gateway of Los Angeles," said Jeff Helfrick, Hawaiian's vice president of airport operations. "Our new position on the west end of Terminal 5 comes with better facilities for both our guests and our employees."

Delta plans to shrink business class on 777
Delta Air Lines plans to shrink the business class cabin on its Boeing 777-200 aircraft when it installs new suites in the coming years. The Atlanta-based carrier plans to configure the business class cabin, or Delta One, with 28 lie-flat seats in 21 "mini-suites", it says in a filing with the US Federal Aviation Administration. This is nearly a quarter fewer than the current 37 lie-flat seats in business class on the aircraft today.

Asiana operating profit slides in first quarter
Korean carrier Asiana Airlines' operating profit slipped by more than 26% to W26.3 billion ($23 million) over the first quarter. The airline has disclosed its performance in a first-quarter financial statement.

Boeing halts 737 Max flights to investigate engine flaw
Boeing has suspended 737 Max flights after being notified by engine supplier CFM International about a "quality concern" in low pressure turbine discs inside Leap-1B engines. It is not clear how the suspension will affect the precise timing of the first 737 Max 8 delivery to Lion Air Group subsidiary Malindo, but Boeing and CFM say they still plan to start delivering the re-engined aircraft to customers later this month. Production of the 737 Max and 737NG aircraft also will continue.

A350-900ULR range figure not a revision: Airbus
Airbus has disclosed a formal range figure for the A350-900ULR of 9,700nm, but stresses that this was always the intended performance capability for the type. The airframer had not given a specific range for the aircraft when it was launched by Singapore Airlines in 2015.

Airbus has launched its US base and operations of a new commercial drone startup—Airbus Aerial—in Atlanta, Georgia and has appointed Jesse Kallman as president of the US base. The new business offers imagery services fusing drones, satellite images and software to bring deeper insights to commercial customers, Airbus said in a statement.

IAG eyes Paris, Rome as bases for new LCC Level
International Airlines Group (IAG) is considering Paris and Rome as potential bases for its new long-haul, low-cost carrier (LCC) Level, which plans to launch flights from Barcelona June 1. Level will initially operate two Airbus A330s from Barcelona to Los Angeles, followed by San Francisco (Oakland) on June 2, Punta Cana on June 10 and Buenos Aires on June 17.

Turkish Airlines narrows net loss in 1Q
Turkish Airlines recorded a 2017 first-quarter net loss of $373 million, narrowed from a net loss of $421 million for the year-ago quarter. Operating revenue for the quarter was $2 billion, down 10% year-over-year (YOY) from $2.2 billion in the 2016 1Q. Expenses fell 11% to $2.2 billion, producing an operating loss of $209 million, narrowed from a $280 million operating loss in the year-ago period.

Ryanair to base 12 aircraft in Frankfurt
Irish low-cost carrier (LCC) Ryanair will add a further 10 Boeing 737-800s to its Frankfurt base, for a total of 12 aircraft next year, Frankfurt airport operator Fraport CFO Matthias Zieschang told journalists during a analysts conference call May 9.
