E195-E2 completes test flight in normal fly-by-wire mode
Launching a two-year flight test campaign for Brazil’s largest commercial aircraft in history, Embraer completed a 2h-long first flight of the E195-E2 test aircraft in Sao Jose dos Campos on 29 March with the regional jet’s fly-by-wire system engaged in normal mode for the duration, senior vice-president and chief operating officer Luis Carlos Affonso tells FlightGlobal in an interview.

AirBaltic expresses confidence as profits slip
Latvia’s national carrier airBaltic saw its net profit for 2016 drop sharply to €1.2 million ($1.3 million) in 2016 from €19.5 million in 2015 as the carrier encountered falling yields. The drop in profits came despite the company maintaining its revenue at €286 million compared to 2015’s figure of €285 million and increased passengers carried to 2.9 million, up 300,000 on the previous year.

Aegean Airlines Group 2016 revenues surpasses $1 billion
Aegean Airlines Group hit €1 billion in full-year revenue for the first time in 2016, up 6% over $983 million in revenue for 2015. However, “weak demand in the second quarter of the year combined with domestic tax increases in value-added tax on airline fares by 11% had a negative impact on full-year results, despite strong performance in the third and seasonably most important quarter of the year,” Aegean MD Dimitris Gerogiannis said.

Alaska to fly Virgin America's A320s through 2024
Alaska Airlines will operate Virgin America’s Airbus A320 family fleet through at least 2024, as it targets a decision on its long-term fleet mix by the end of this year. Most of the leases on the 63 A319s and A320s in the Virgin America fleet expire by 2024, says Alaska chief financial officer Brandon Pedersen during an investor day presentation today. If these are allowed to expire, the airline will operate just 13 of these aircraft, 10 of which are owned, at the end of the period.

CityJet to take four more CRJ900s
Dublin-based regional CityJet has converted four options for Bombardier CRJ900s into firm orders. The deal is part of an order for six CRJ900s announced Feb. 1. The transaction is valued at approximately $467 million at list prices, now that all options have been exercised.

Delta and Korean Air move forward on transpacific JV plans
Delta Air Lines and Korean Air will have signed a memorandum of agreement that will establish a transpacific joint venture between the two SkyTeam carriers. In a joint statement, the two airlines say that they intend to create a “fully integrated trans-Pacific joint venture arrangement, with both airlines sharing the costs and revenues on flights and coordinating schedules for seamless, convenient connections.”

Etihad to make iPads available on US-bound flights
Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways will make iPads available for first- and business-class passengers to use on US-bound flights starting April 2. The move is an attempt by Etihad to work around the US government’s prohibition on passengers carrying on electronic devices larger than smartphones on nonstop flights to the US from 10 airports, including Abu Dhabi International.

Flybe predicts small annual loss as tough conditions continue
UK-based regional carrier Flybe anticipates making a small adjusted pre-tax loss for the year ending March 31, as it continues to fight in a highly competitive European market, the company said March 29. Flybe will announce its full-year results June 8; in a pre-close trading statement the carrier confirmed it was slowing its growth rate in the tough commercial environment.

JetBlue and the Boston Red Sox have extended their relationship through 2030, marking the commitment by giving away 43,000 co-branded hats to students at 104 Boston public schools. JetBlue is the largest airline in Boston and the official airline of the Red Sox.

Peruvian 737 crashed into fence before fire: airport
The Peruvian Airlines Boeing 737-300 that had veered off the runway in Jauja had crashed into a perimeter fence before catching on fire, says airport operator Corpac. The aircraft landed at the airport at 16:28 on 28 March after a flight from Lima and veered to the right about 1,760m (5,790ft) from the start of the runway, before its right wing crashed into the perimeter fence, setting off a fire that engulfed the jet.

United's Polaris business class coming to Hong Kong-San Francisco flights
United Airlines has selected its Hong Kong-San Francisco route for the international debut of Polaris business class. United has purchased 14 new Boeing 777-300ER passenger jets that will all feature Polaris business class cabins.

RAF welcomes updated Chinook HC5
The UK Royal Air Force has received the first of its Boeing CH-47 Chinooks upgraded to the HC5 standard. Delivered to the service’s Odiham base in Hampshire on 22 March, the tandem-rotor helicopter is the first of eight HC3 models to undergo modernisation by Boeing under the Ministry of Defence’s Project Julius initiative.

A new torpedo upgrade that will fundamentally change the way US Navy airmen hunt submarines is on track to seek approval to begin low-rate initial production later this year, Boeing and Navy officials say on 28 March. The Lockheed Martin High Altitude Anti-submarine warfare Weapon Capability (HAAWC) is in the midst of safe separation tests from the Boeing P-8A Poseidon. A guided flight test is planned in late Fiscal 2017, allowing the programme potentially to order 140 high-altitude torpedoes total over the first two lots.

RAF Northolt to close in 2018 for runway renovation
RAF Northolt, the fourth-largest airport in the London area for business aviation traffic, is to close temporarily in early 2018 for runway renovation. The UK Ministry of Defence-run site – home to the Royal Air Force’s VIP transport-dedicated 32 Sqn – is a popular destination for business aircraft operators because of its location around 12 miles (20km) from the UK capital.
