Airbus sells three A380s to undisclosed customer
Airbus logged three firm A380 orders in December 2015 to an undisclosed customer, but the manufacturer declined to comment on whether they are destined for Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA). Speaking at the manufacturer’s annual press briefing in Paris, Airbus president and CEO Fabrice Brégier said: “We have three new A380 orders. The customer has asked to remain undisclosed, but it is a firm order.”

Airbus posts record figures for 2015
Airbus delivered 635 aircraft in 2015 and secured net orders for a further 1,036, taking its production backlog to 6,787 units worth $996.3 billion at list prices. “This commercial and industrial performance unequivocally proves that global demand for our aircraft has remained resilient,” Airbus president and CEO Fabrice Brégier said, briefing journalists at the manufacturer’s annual press conference in Paris.

Airbus prices rise 1.1% for 2016
Average list prices for Airbus’ commercial fleet have risen 1.1%, effective Jan. 1, 2016, according to a statement released by the Toulouse-based manufacturer. “The price increase has been calculated according to Airbus’ standard escalation formula over the January 2015 to January 2016 period,” Airbus said. “It takes into account the drop in materials and commodities prices.”

Airbus' Leahy Hints About Bigger A350
Airbus indicated a change in priorities as its sales chief John Leahy hinted at a possible decision this year to challenge Boeing in the 400 seat market while pushing talk of a revamped A380 to the middle of next decade. John Leahy told Reuters news agency any decision to launch a bigger A350 would need to be made this year and that it would have to enter service soon after 2020, which is the entry-to-service date for Boeing's 406-seat 777-9X.

AirAsia X switches remaining A330s to re-engined variant
Long-haul low-cost operator AirAsia X has cancelled 11 Airbus A330-300s in favor of taking 11 re-engined A330neo jets. Airbus has revealed the agreement in its full-year order and delivery data for 2015, released during a briefing in Paris.

Air Malta silent on Etihad claims
Air Malta has declined to comment on reports that it is in discussions with Etihad Airways over a link-up with the fast-expanding Abu Dhabi carrier. Reports in the Maltese press have spoken of negotiations between the two carriers; Etihad has previously taken equity stakes in several European carriers such as airberlin, Air Serbia and Switzerland’s Darwin Arline, which now operates as Etihad Regional.

Allegiant to enter Southwest stronghold BWI as part of expansion
Las Vegas-based ultra low-cost carrier (ULCC) Allegiant Air is adding three new airports to its route network, notably including Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). BWI is the US East Coast stronghold of Southwest Airlines. The Dallas-based carrier, the US’s original LCC, is by far BWI’s largest carrier with about a 70% market share at the airport.

American Writes Off Cash Trapped In Venezuela
American Airlines has written off more than half a billion dollars in revenue stuck in Venezuela because of currency controls. American said it will include a USD$592 million special charge in the just-ended fourth quarter "due to continued lack of repatriations and deterioration of economic conditions in Venezuela." The South American country had compelled carriers to sell tickets in bolivars but made converting the sales into US dollars difficult. Globally, airlines have around USD$3.7 billion trapped in Venezuela as a result of its 12 year currency control system, IATA said in June.

ANA to take 8.8% stake in Vietnam Airlines
Star Alliance-linked ANA Holdings has signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire an 8.8% strategic investment in SkyTeam member Vietnam Airlines, valued at VND2.4 billion ($107 million). The planned “business and capital partnership” between the two airlines, which remains subject to finalization and regulatory approvals, was announced to the London Stock Exchange on Jan. 12.

Cargolux expected to establish China joint venture
Luxemburg-based Cargolux is expected to finalize a shareholder agreement to establish a joint venture (JV), “Cargolux China,” next week. A Cargolux spokesperson confirmed it will hold a board of directors meeting Jan. 19. “After this meeting we will be able to give more details” about the planned JV, the spokesman added.

Air Travel Demand Tempered By Transaero, Lufthansa
Demand for air travel slowed in November from the previous month, muted by the halt of operations by Transaero and strikes at Lufthansa, IATA said. Demand for air travel, measured in revenue passenger kilometers, rose 5.9 percent in November, compared with a 7.1 percent gain recorded in October.

Southwest Airlines flew more passengers in Dec.
Southwest Airlines transported 8.6% more passengers in December on a year-over-year basis. The carrier also boosted load factor by 0.3% from the same month of 2014 to 83% for December.

United to offer more East Coast destinations from DIA
United Airlines plans to launch nonstop service between Denver and two East Coast cities. United will offer daily service from Denver International Airport to Hartford, Conn., and Richmond, Va. "With these new flights to Hartford and Richmond, United now proudly serves 125 nonstop destinations across the US from our Denver hub," said Randle Loveland, director of regional sales for the carrier.

United boosts customer service with new lost-and-found system
United Airlines returned 50,000 lost items to travelers in 2015 after installing a new system designed to bolster customer service. The lost-and-found items returned ranged from technology such as tablets to personal items such as dentures.

Alaska to invest in Sonoma County, Calif., airport
The Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport in California is likely to handle 300,000 passengers this year. "We're continuing to invest in the market thanks to the strong partnership we have with community and a good response from Sonoma County customers to our service," said Ann Zaninovich, an Alaska Airlines spokeswoman.

Group works to restore retired fighter jet in time for 2016 airshow
A group of volunteers and professionals at Waukegan National Airport in Illinois are restoring a retired Air Force F-111 Aardvark in time for the 2016 Wings Over Waukegan Air Show scheduled for September. The $100,000 project is being funded by donations, said Jim Hull, a pilot and president of the Experimental Aircraft Association's Lake County Chapter 414.

P&W delivers last C-17-powering F117 to US air force
Pratt & Whitney has delivered its 1,313th and final F117-100 high-bypass turbofan engine that powers the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing C-17 strategic airlifter, marking the end of an era for the PW2000 engine family. Based on the commercial PW2040 powerplant for the Boeing 757, which ceased production in 2004, the last F117 has been ceremoniously handed over to the US Air Force at the P&W engine center in Middletown, Connecticut.
