Air France's plans to cut jobs and activity can still be avoided if negotiations between managers and unions progress, the airline's board said. The board renewed its support for chief executive Alexandre de Juniac after he updated them on talks with unions about a restructuring that could see 2,900 jobs cut at Air France.

Delta CEO Warning Prompts Questions On 777 Production
Delta Air Lines' warning of a "bubble" in the market for used airliners shows how vulnerable Boeing may be because of slowing 777 sales, and raised speculation that it may have to cut the plane's production rate. Delta chief executive Richard Anderson said he expects prices for used twin-aisle jets to fall, and that the weakness will spread to single-aisle planes, presenting airlines with "some huge buying opportunities." Boeing, which is due to report its third-quarter earnings next Wednesday, needs to secure orders for about 200 more 777s, at its current rate of production, before its successor, the 777X, enters service in 2020.

Pam Am flight 103 was blown up over the Scottish town of Lockerbie on December 21, 1988 en route from London to New York. In 2001, Libyan Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was jailed for life and remains the only person to have been convicted over the bombing. A Scottish Crown Office spokesman said the two unnamed Libyans were now suspected of being involved with Megrahi in carrying out the attack.

Qatar interested in A350 stretch: Al Baker
Qatar Airways would be interested in buying a stretched A350-1000 derivative should Airbus decide to build one, but only if it offers enough of a step over the rival Boeing 777-9X. The airline is already a major customer for the A350, holding orders for 80 XWBs and being launch operator for both the -900 and -1000. However at the Dubai air show in 2013 Qatar Airways was among the airlines signing up for Boeing’s larger, revamped 777X. It placed orders for 60 aircraft (10 -8X and 50 -9X), for delivery from 2020.

A network US Airways built through mergers
US Airways was an airline with ambition, growing through five separate mergers to become the fourth largest US carrier when its last flight lands early this Saturday and the name disappears into American Airlines. Allegheny Airlines, the predecessor to US Airways, traces its roots to airmail flights in western Pennsylvania in 1939. Its network remained concentrated in Pennsylvania and the mid-Atlantic (see this 1964 map) until it acquired Lake Central Airlines in 1968 and Mohawk Airlines in 1972, resulting in a network extending from from the Ohio River Valley to New England as seen in this 1977 map.

Berlin's New Airport Keeps 2017 Target
The chief executive of Berlin's much-delayed new airport still hopes for it to be completed in the second half of 2017, even though the deadline is getting tight. The EUR€5.3 billion (USD$6 billion) airport, meant to replace the capital's three Cold War-era hubs, has been under construction since 2006 and was originally planned to open in 2011. Now the six-month buffer that new chief executive Karsten Muehlenfeld built into his 2017 deadline has been partially eaten away because of amendments to the planning application needed to fix errors and comply with updated security guidelines. The insolvency of contractor Imtech has also caused a delay.

And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen
