Boeing enters detailed design phase on 777-9X
Boeing can move into the detailed design stage for the 777-9X having now reached the firm configuration milestone, the airframer has disclosed. The 777-9X adds to the current 777-300ER a longer, composite wing as well as General Electric GE9X turbofan engines, folding wing-tips, and a stretched and updated fuselage. A new promotional video released by Boeing today discloses that the 777-9X's wing area will be nearly 20% larger and significantly more flexible than the current version's, greatly improving aerodynamic efficiency. "The team has followed a disciplined process to complete all of the requirements for this stage of the programme," says Bob Feldmann, Boeing's general manager for the 777X programme, which also includes the longer-range 777-8X variant.

Sukhoi reveals plan to slash Superjet cost
Sukhoi Civil Aircraft has unveiled a plan to reduce the cost of producing the Superjet by $2.6 million per aircraft by replacing Western suppliers with Russian manufacturers. The move announced by United Aircraft (UAC) chief executive Yuri Slyusar at the MAKS air show is aimed at stabilising the programme’s costs amidst a year-old devaluation of the ruble compared to the dollar.

Airlines Fail In Damages Claims Over Strike
Several airlines have failed in a bid to claim million of euros in damages from German air traffic controllers' union GdF for a strike at Stuttgart airport in 2009 and for planned strikes in 2011. A German federal court ruled that four airlines had no right to damages for cancelled, delayed or diverted flights as a result of the six-hour strike on April 6, 2009, because the strike was aimed at the operation of the German air traffic controllers' authority and not the airlines.

Avolon delivers one Boeing 737-800 aircraft to Aeromexico
Avolon, the international aircraft leasing company, today announces the delivery of a fourth Boeing 737-800 to Aeromexico. The delivery is the fourth of four Boeing 737-800 aircraft delivered to Aeromexico by Avolon.

Cargojet & UPS Enter Into Long-Term Air Cargo Services Agreement
Cargojet announced today they have entered into a new Air Cargo Service Agreement with United Parcel Service Canada Ltd. This Agreement replaces the agreement originally entered into in 2003 to provide domestic overnight air cargo services throughout Canada. "Cargojet is extremely pleased to have success extended our long-standing business relationship as the primary domestic air cargo service provider to UPS in Canada.

Jazz reaches a new tentative agreement with its flight attendants
Jazz, announced today that a new tentative agreement has been reached with its approximately 820 flight attendants represented by the Canadian Flight Attendant Union ("CFAU"). The new labour agreement is subject to ratification. Additional information will be available following ratification.

PAL Considering Boeing, Airbus Orders
Airbus and Boeing are competing for contracts to supply Philippine Airlines with eight wide-body, twin-engine aircraft, PAL's president said. The acquisition or lease of Boeing 787 Dreamliner or Airbus A350 XWB aircraft is a result of a strategic review after Philippines' fourth richest man Lucio Tan took over the carrier last year.

Airbus To Delay Delivery Of Transaero A380
Airbus is delaying the delivery of Transaero's first A380, as the recession-hit Russian economy dents travel demand in the region. "The contract is still in place," an Airbus spokeswoman said. "We are looking at rescheduling the delivery of the first plane, which was planned for this year." She added that there were no details of the new delivery schedule.

WestJet's first wide-body aircraft touches down today
WestJet today ushers in a new era in the airline's 19-year history with the arrival early this morning of the first of four Boeing 767-300 extended range aircraft, allowing the airline to begin serving Europe and other regions of the world from Canada on a non-stop basis. Inaugural wide-body flights will begin in early September.

North Korea's shiny new airport falls short of expectations
Pyongyang’s shiny new airport building has all the features international travellers have come to expect. On arrival passengers see coffee and well-stocked souvenir shops, a DVD stand, information desk and a slickly produced billboard showing a crew of the nation’s flag-carrier, Air Koryo, looking sharp in their blue and red uniforms. There are even two chocolate fountains. One for white chocolate and the other one for dark.

Danes withdraw F-16s from Iraq deployment
The Royal Danish Air Force has withdrawn its fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16s from the Middle East, where the aircraft had been participating in the air campaign effort against extremists in Iraq, according to local reports. Foreign minister Kristian Jensen is reported by the national Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) as saying that the F-16s will now undergo repairs and maintenance, and the personnel operating them will receive additional training.

Lockheed Martin’s Hybrid Wing-Body Future Airlifter
Under study for six years, Lockheed Martin’s Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) concept is designed to carry all of the outsize cargo now airlifted the Lockheed C-5 while burning 70% less fuel than the Boeing C-17. Over-wing nacelles make it easier to install large-diameter, fuel-efficient very-high-bypass engines.

UK hands Typhoon baton over to Germany for NATO mission
A Royal Air Force detachment of Eurofighter Typhoons has completed its rotation in support of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission in Estonia, handing over to a German unit of the same type. Four RAF Typhoons assigned to the 121 Expeditionary Wing were based at Amari air base from 1 May, and on 25 August responsibility was handed over to the German air force’s 31st Tactical Air Wing. The latter will take over the role also using four Eurofighters.
