Antonov quietly launches new heavy transport
Ukraine's Antonov appears to have quietly launched a new program at Paris for a jet-powered military and civil transport. During an air show press conference, chief designer Dymitry Kiva identified the new type as the An-188, a turbofan-engined variant of the An-70 propfan.

AerCap to take 100 737 Max 8s
AerCap has placed an order for 100 Boeing Max 8s, joining the customer list for the manufacturer's re-engined narrowbody family. "This order complements our existing orderbook in the single-aisle category and is in line with our customer needs and our fleet strategy of leasing the most-in-demand and technologically advanced equipment," says AerCap chief executive Aengus Kelly.

Boeing Gets 30 737 MAX Ruili Airlines Order
Chinese start-up airline Ruili Airlines has committed to buy 30 Boeing 737 MAX jets, backed by AVIC Leasing, in a potential deal worth USD$3.2 billion at list prices. The order is subject to approval by the Chinese government and will be posted on Boeing's website "once all contingencies are cleared", Boeing said.

Air Canada adds jumbo jet to Calgary-Heathrow route
Air Canada will roster a B787-8 aircraft between Calgary and London Heathrow from early next year. The carrier currently operates 11 weekly services between the two cities. From January 28 until March 26, it will add the Dreamliner to flights AC850/851, reports airlineroute.net. It is unclear whether this will continue into the summer season.

Air Astana takes long-range A321neo to replace 757s
Kazakhstan's Air Astana is the first to secure a lease of the long-range version of the Airbus A321neo. The aircraft will come from the jet's first customer, Air Lease. Air Astana will take a batch of five A321neo and two A320neo jets from the US lessor. Four out of the five larger aircraft will be the long-range variant, which will have a maximum take-off weight of 97t.

American Airlines opts for flexibility in taking jet delivery
American Airlines will wait until at least 2021 to start taking delivery of 35 Airbus A320neo jetliners. The timeline allows American greater capacity flexibility.

Cebu Pacific orders 16 high-density ATR 72-600s
Cebu Pacific Air has ordered 16 ATR 72-600s which will be the first aircraft of the turboprop model to be fitted with the manufacturer's high-density Armonia cabin. The Philippine carrier, which also took options on 10 additional -600s, currently operates a fleet of eight ATR 72-500s, which will be retired as the new aircraft enter service from August 2018, says the manufacturer.

Delta to increase service on Seattle-Tokyo route
Delta Air Lines Inc. will keep its route from Seattle and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, provided it continues a daily service in the Seattle market year-round. The U.S. Department of Transportation said Delta “virtually abandoned” the Seattle-Haneda route last winter by operating service only one week every 90 days between October 2014 and late-March 2015.

Hawaiian Airlines hires Cummisky to head government relations
Margaret Cummisky, the current assistant secretary for legislative and intergovernmental affairs with the U.S. Department of Commerce, has been tapped as the new managing director of federal government relations for Hawaiian Airlines. "Margaret's knowledge of Hawaii and Washington makes her the ideal person to amplify Hawaiian's voice in our nation's Capital," said Ann Botticelli, senior vice president for corporate communications and public affairs with the airline.

Hawaiian Airlines rolls out satellite-based cockpit communications
Hawaiian Airlines, by year-end, will have nine Boeing 767s equipped to use Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband satellite-based communications service, to test the viability of an Internet Protocol (IP)-based broadband data system exclusively for use in transmitting operational and safety data to and from the cockpit.

JetBlue Airways considers adding long-range aircraft
JetBlue is considering modifying its standing order with Airbus to include a number of A321LR aircraft. The LR, or long range, modification allows the planes to serve on trans-continental routes. According to Executive Vice President Marty St. George, the new planes would open up routes to South America. "We could even make it to Brazil with a 321LR," he said.

Korean follows A321neo deal by signing for 30 Max jets
Korean Air intends to purchase 30 Boeing 737 Max jets and has taken options on an additional 20, the manufacturer confirms. The narrowbody deal was disclosed shortly after a similarly structured one under which Korean tentatively agreed to purchase 30 Airbus A321neos and take options on 20 more. Max 8s and substitution rights to Max 9s are covered by Korean's new arrangement with Boeing, says the US airframer.

Neos to take Trent-powered 787s
Italian operator Neos has been disclosed as a customer for three Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered Boeing 787-8s. The carrier is to lease the jets from AerCap and Rolls-Royce states that the powerplant agreement had already been recorded in its order book.

Sriwijaya Air Orders Two Boeing 737-900ERs
Indonesia's Sriwijaya Air has ordered two Boeing 737-900ERs and signed a letter of intent to exercise options for up to 20 additional 737s. The order was previously attributed to an unidentified customer on Boeing's website, the plane maker said.

United exits JFK as it moves premium transcon flights to Newark
United Airlines will move its transcontinental premium “PS” service to its Newark Liberty International airport hub in October, allowing it to consolidate its premium operations at the facility while boosting Delta Air Lines at New York John F Kennedy International airport. In what is arguably the most dramatic change in air service at New York City’s three airports since the Delta-US Airways slot swap in 2011, Chicago-based United will shift all of its flights between Newark and both Los Angeles and San Francisco to PS- or internationally-configured Boeing 757-200s on 25 October. Service to New York John F Kennedy International airport will end the same day.

Southern Calif. airports may be next to get NextGen air traffic control
The Federal Aviation Administration is proposing installation of NextGen air traffic control systems for airports in Southern California to improve safety and shorten flight times. "We are transitioning from a radar-based system to a satellite-based system," said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. "This set of technologies will give us better efficiency, better fuel burn, environmental benefits and improved safety."

Airbus announces C295W sale to Saudi Arabia
Airbus Defence & Space has identified Saudi Arabia as the customer for four C295Ws, with the medium transports to be operated by the nation’s interior ministry. “The C295W has been chosen based on its demonstrated excellent operational capabilities in hot and severe conditions, and its proven affordable maintenance and operational costs,” the manufacturer says. It has not revealed when the winglet-equipped aircraft will be handed over.

Kellstrom to assist with C-130 transfers to Indonesia
Kellstrom Defense Aerospace has been selected by Airbus Group Asia Pacific to assist with the transition of five Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules from the Royal Australian Air Force to Indonesia. Under the agreement, Kellstrom’s Australian subsidiary will procure, inspect, warehouse and deliver C-130H material to Airbus’s facility at RAAF Base Richmond, and provide further support to the program.

UK clears A400M for training flight resumption
The UK Royal Air Force is to resume training flights with its first pair of Airbus A400M tactical transports “with immediate effect”, the service announced on 16 June. “Having undertaken and completed a series of thorough checks on the UK’s A400M aircraft and how it is operated, the RAF is now satisfied that the additional processes and procedures introduced means it is now safe to resume flying,” the service says.
