Fresh sanctions: UK bans Russian airlines from selling valuable airport slots
The UK government is banning Russian airlines from selling their landing slots at UK airports as part of fresh sanctions over the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The sanctions mean Aeroflot, Ural Airlines and Rossiya will be unable to sell their unused take-off and landing slots at UK airports. The UK government estimates these slots are worth £50 million ($62 million).
“As long as Putin continues his barbarous assault on Ukraine, we will continue to target the Russian economy,” Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in a statement on May 19, 2022.  “We’ve already closed our airspace to Russian airlines. Today we’re making sure they can’t cash in their lucrative landing slots at our airports.”

ATR evolves to the ATR ‘EVO’
ATR, the world leader in regional aviation, today announced its plans for the next generation of its best-selling family of regional aircraft by 2030, the ATR ‘EVO’.
The plan foresees advanced design features and a new power plant with hybrid capability to offer customers the next generation of ATR aircraft. It will encompass innovative technologies to enable significant improvements in performance, economics and sustainability. Incorporating a new eco-design that includes new propellers and enhanced cabin and systems, it will remain a two-engine turboprop that can be powered by 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
In the coming months, ATR will work with airlines, engine manufacturers and systems providers, with the aim to launch the program by 2023.

DARPA unveils new heavy-lift ground-effect seaplane concept
DARPA has unveiled the "Liberty Lifter" concept, an aircraft that promises to combine the advantages of the ekranoplan and those of the seaplane.
The Liberty Lifter is designed to be q “long-range, low-cost X-plane capable of seaborne strategic and tactical lift”. The project, presented by DARPA, has a twin-fuselage design reminiscent of the Stratolauch built by Scaled Composites to carry air-launch-to-orbit rockets.
Much like the Soviet-era ekranoplans, the aircraft imagined by DARPA will be capable of highly controlled flight close to turbulent water surfaces, and able to take advantage of the "ground effect,” which results in an increase in lift and a decrease in drag when an aircraft flies at very low altitude.

JetBlue responds to Spirit Airlines board recommendation
JetBlue Airways has issued the following statement in response to the Spirit Airlines Board recommendation:
It’s no surprise that Spirit shareholders are getting more of the same from the Spirit Board. The Spirit Board, driven by serious conflicts of interest, continues to ignore the best interests of its shareholders by distorting the facts to distract from their flawed process and protect their inferior deal with Frontier.
Regarding regulatory approval, Spirit would have you ignore the current regulatory climate to think that approval of their Frontier deal is assured. That is simply not true. Both deals are subject to regulatory review, and both deals have a similar risk profile. Spirit shareholders recognize that and are showing great interest in hearing more about our superior offer and the regulatory commitments and protections we have made, including a reverse break-up fee.

China Southern Airlines is uncertain on whether it will take any more Boeing 737 MAX deliveries
China Southern Airlines has stated it has not yet confirmed a timetable for the delivery of its remaining Boeing 737 MAX jets on order from Boeing.
The airline has 24 Boeing 737-8 MAX 8s grounded in China although Chinese authorities has authorized the type to fly again.
Complicating the issue has been the dramatic downturn in traffic in China due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
Previously the airline predicted 39 MAX jets would be delivered in 2022, 37 in 2023 and 27 in 2024. This is now in doubt.

A roadmap to the up-and-coming low-cost carriers
Despite the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the aviation industry has witnessed a boom in start-up airlines. New carriers took advantage of favorable conditions during the pandemic by buying new aircraft at cheaper rates and securing slots on empty routes.
But what can we expect from the up-and-coming budget airlines? Here, AeroTime examines the low-cost carriers (LCCs) due to launch in 2022.

IAG finally places order for Boeing 737 MAX aircraft
International Airlines Group (IAG) (IAG) will order 50 new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with options for another 100, partly firming up plans for a tentative order announced back in 2019.
The agreement will see IAG order 25 Boeing 737-8200 aircraft, and 25 Boeing 737-10. It includes options for a further 100 aircraft. The Boeing narrowbodies will be available to its group airlines, which include British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling.
IAG surprised the industry by signing a letter of intent (LoI) for 200 MAX aircraft at the Paris Air Show in 2019. The LoI represented a show of confidence in the MAX after the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airline crashes in 2018 and 2019, which killed 346 people and resulted in the grounding of the narrowbody jet.

easyJet posts $691M loss, bets on strong summer season
easyJet has published its financial results for the first half of 2022, reporting a loss of more than $691 million. But despite the loss, the airline remains confident in a “strong summer ahead”, predicting that its summer plans will see it “reaching near 2019 flying levels”.
According to the report, which was issued on May 19, 2022, during the first half of 2022, the British low-cost airline repaid more than $372 million of commercial paper, meaning that the carrier managed to fulfill all of its debt maturities until FY2023.
As the UK government began to ease air travel restrictions, easyJet reported a sharp rise in passenger traffic. During the first six months of the year, the carrier served 30.3 million passengers, leading to a notable revenue increase of almost $1.9 million.

Sukhoi on track to begin serial production of S-70 attack drone in 2023
Russia is on track to launch the serial production of the Sukhoi S-70 Okhotnik (‘Hunter’) attack drone in 2023.
In August 2020, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation told the UAC to “speed up the experimental design work and maximally adjust the schedule” to meet that deadline. The aircraft was initially planned to still be in the testing phase of its armament in 2024, with the delivery due to happen the following year. Now the Russian Defense Ministry could get its hands on the aircraft as early as 2023.
"The first flying prototype was rolled out in 2021, and we will begin serial-producing and delivering it to the Defense Ministry in 2023," Rostec CEO Sergei Chemezov said during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "A new ground control post is being created for the drone.”

Aviation Quote

Every day kill just one, rather than today five, tomorrow ten . . . that is enough for you. Then your nerves are calm and you can sleep good, you have your drink in the evening and the next morning you are fit again.
