Airlines forced to cancel dozens of flights due to Tonga volcano eruption
Dozens of flights were cancelled due to huge volcanic ash clouds after an underwater volcano, Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai, erupted in Tonga over the weekend. 
Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Quantas were forced to cancel several flights to islands in the southwestern Pacific, while Fiji Airways and Fiji Link have grounded the majority of flights for several days.  
The underwater volcano was located approximately 70 km (54 mi) from Tongatapu, an island that houses the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga. It began to erupt in December 2021.

Suspect arrested after two air cargo crew injured in Miami Airport shooting
A shooting incident at an air cargo company near Miami International Airport (MIA) has left two cargo crew injured, while one employee has been arrested by Miami-Dade police.
The incident occurred at around 19:30 pm on January 13, 2022. 
A MIA representative confirmed to AeroTime via an emailed statement that the shooting took place in a cargo area occupied by Cargo Force, a freight forwarding company that provides cargo and mail handling services across 13 airports in the US.

FAA issues airworthiness notification related to 5G and Boeing 787 aircraft
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an airworthiness notification regarding the 5G network deployment and the Boeing 787 aircraft family.
According to the FAA, in the airworthiness notification released January 14, 2022, operators of Boeing 787s are required to take additional precautions when landing on wet or snowy runways at airports where 5G C-band service is deployed.
“The FAA determined anomalies on Boeing Model 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 airplanes due to 5G C-Band interference which may affect multiple airplane systems using radio altimeter data, regardless of the approach type or weather,” the FAA airworthiness notification said.

Texel Air adds its first Boeing 737-800BCF
Texel Air, an established airline and MRO based in the Kingdom of Bahrain, celebrated the launch of the latest addition to its fleet and the very first for the region, a 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF).
The 737-800BCF is a full freighter aircraft that is highly in demand in the global air cargo market and is the first of its kind in the Middle East with a second of the same aircraft type due to arrive in September 2022. These new aircraft will enable Texel Air to carry larger cargo volumes, fly greater distances and to new destinations on behalf of its current and future customer base across the Middle East, India, Turkey, East Africa, and other global markets.

The U.S. Department of Transportation approves Norse Atlantic Airways’ application for transatlantic flights
The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) on January 14 approved Norse Atlantic Airways’ application for the operation of flights between Norway/The European Union and the United States.
Norse Atlantic will deliver many jobs to American workers, including hundreds of U.S.-based flight attendants, and will partner with local communities, tourism organizations, businesses, and labor to stimulate economic growth in regions throughout the United States and Europe. In May, Norse Atlantic reached a historic pre-hire agreement with the U.S. Association of Flight Attendants.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi to launch three new routes
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has announced it will add new routes to Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), Yerevan (Armenia), and Krasnodar (Russia) in February 2022.
The new airline celebrated it first anniversary on January 15, 2022.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a joint venture by ADQ, one of the region’s largest holding companies with a broad portfolio of major enterprises spanning key sectors of Abu Dhabi’s diversified economy, and Wizz Air Holdings Plc.

Greater Bay Airlines eyes potential order of 30 jets
Cathay Pacific’s rival Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) is reportedly in talks with both Airbus and Boeing to purchase at least 30 narrow-body aircraft valued at $1.8 billion, a source familiar with the matter told Bloomberg on January 17, 2022.  
According to the report, Hong Kong’s newest airline is currently deciding between the Airbus A321neos or the Boeing 737 MAX 10 jets.

Armenia’s new national carrier Fly Arna unveils livery
Start-up airline Fly Arna has revealed its new livery, showcasing the visual brand identity of its fleet. 
Fly Arna is Armenia’s new national airline and a joint venture between the Armenian government-owned investment fund ANIF and United Arab Emirates low-cost carrier, Air Arabia Group.  
The joint venture was created in July 2021.
According to a statement made by the airline, its logo and branding colors were inspired by the Armenian flag and reflect “the young, modern and a value-driven national carrier that strives to become the most accessible and sensible choice for air travel in Armenia and beyond”.

FedEx asks FAA permission to add missile-defense system to A321 freighter
American cargo airline FedEx is seeking permission from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to install a laser-based missile-defense system on its cargo aircraft.  
In the filing dated January 7, 2022, the Department of Transportation of the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that FedEx had asked permission to modify the Airbus A321-200 aircraft by installing the system.  
In the document, the FAA stated that FedEx applied for a specific type certificate, which would allow the company to modify the commercial transport-category plane in October 2019. At the time, FedEx asked permission to install “a system that emits infrared laser energy outside the aircraft,” the FAA filing reads.

Stratolaunch Roc conducts third flight, prepares for hypersonic tests
Stratolaunch Roc, the world’s largest aircraft by wingspan, has completed its third test flight. 
The airplane took off at 8:47 AM PST (16:47 GMT) on January 16, 2022, from Mojave Air & Space Port (MHV), and spent four hours 23 minutes in the air. According to Stratolaunch, it reached the altitude of 23,500 feet (7,162.8 meters). 
“Today’s successful flight demonstrates and validates improvements to the carrier aircraft’s systems and overall flight performance. We will take the data we gathered today and continue to advance the aircraft’s operational performance to support hypersonic testing in 2022,” Dr. Zachary Krevor, Stratolaunch President and Chief Operating Officer, is quoted in the company’s press release.

CC-115 Buffalo search and rescue aircraft flies its last mission in Canada
The Royal Canadian Air Force has retired its De Havilland Canada DHC-5 Buffalo aircraft. Its last operational mission took place on January 15, 2021. 
The search and rescue aircraft, known in Canada as the CC-115, was operated by the 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron based at Comox air base on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.  
The CC-115 entered service in 1967. It succeeded another De Havilland Canada aircraft, the DHC-4 Caribou. As such, the utility transport aircraft needed to be agile, and capable of operating from almost any runway. Its half-century of service life is a testimony to its efficiency, having saved countless lives over the years in areas such as the Arctic Sea and the great snowy plains of Canada, even all the way to the Rocky Mountains.
