United operates first flight with one of the engines using 100% sustainable fuel
In an effort to combat climate change, United Airlines operated a flight that’s a first in aviation history: the first passenger flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in one of the aircraft’s engine. The United Airlines flight UA 2701 took off on December 1, 2021 from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and landed at Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport (DCA). The flight was operated by United Airlines’ new 737 MAX 8.

Did a lack of flying due to COVID-19 lead to a go-around incident in Scotland?
The AAIB issued a special bulletin on December 2, 2021 to highlight the issue after starting an investigation into the go-around incident on September 11, 2021. The TUI Airways Boeing 737-800, aircraft registration G-FDZF, with 67 passengers and six crew on board, was flying to ABZ from Palma de Mallorca (PMI) when the incident occurred at approximately 1240 UTC.

LOT eyes fleet renewal with either Airbus A220 or Embraer E2
Poland’s flag-carrier, LOT Polish Airlines, reportedly aims to modernize its regional jet fleet by adding either Airbus A220 or Embraer E2 aircraft. The airline anticipates the first aircraft deliveries in 2024. Currently, LOT has a fleet of 49 regional jets, which it aims to replace by ordering a new batch of aircraft either from Airbus or Embraer.

Jet Airways in talks with Airbus, Boeing, eyes 100 jet order
India’s Jet Airways is reportedly in talks with Airbus and Boeing to purchase at least 100 narrow-body aircraft, valued at $12 billion, the carrier’s new owners Kalrock Capital and Murari Lal Jalan consortium told BloombergQuint on December 2, 2021.

Airbus Delivers Its 2,000th A320 To IndiGo
Two years after taking delivery of the 1,000th A320neo family jet in 2019, Indian budget airline IndiGo can proudly claim that it has taken delivery of the 2,000th aircraft. Taking place on Tuesday, November 30th, the airline made the announcement on December 2nd, noting that this particular jet is the longest member of the A320neo family, the A321neo.

Virgin Australia Partners With Link Airways
After a nearly two-year absence, Virgin Australia is returning to the Sydney – Canberra flight corridor. The short route links Australia’s biggest city and the national capital, and is currently served by Qantas and Regional Express (Rex).

Mango Remains Stuck In Airline Limbo
South African low-cost carrier Mango remains in airline limbo after 84% of creditors voted in favor of an amended business rescue plan. But the carrier doesn’t yet have the funding to resume flying – and there is no guarantee it will. In late October, sole shareholder South African Airways (SAA) confirmed it was not in a position to, nor did it want to provide further funding to get Mango back into the air.

United Is Worried About Omicron
The Omicron variant is dampening demand on key international flight routes, including the all-important transatlantic corridor. Once again, countries are imposing travel restrictions, including the United States, where inbound international travelers, including US citizens, will now need proof of a negative COVID test taken within 24 hours of departure.

VivaAir Passes Pre-Covid Levels
The Colombian ultra-low-cost carrier Viva Air has had an outstanding 2021, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. It has already surpassed its pre-pandemic traffic levels, has doubled its international network, and is becoming one of the top three players in Colombia, forcing both Avianca and LATAM to adapt their strategies and reduce costs.

Emirates To Resume LGW Airbus A380 Flights
Dubai-based Emirates is set to resume Airbus A380 flights to London Gatwick Airport from next week. The airline had said that flights to London’s secondary airport would be operated by the Boeing 777 when they relaunch from December 10th, though current schedule data shows that Emirates is going slightly bigger for one of its most important routes.

Azores Airlines’ Long-Haul A321
Azores Airlines has begun the first-ever non-stop service between New York JFK and Funchal, Madeira. It uses the A321neo, another example of how the aircraft can open up thin long-haul opportunities, and it comes shortly after Ryanair announced a base on Madeira. It seems that Azores Airlines will begin Ponta Delgada to JFK next year.

The US Tightens Testing Requirements For Incoming Passengers
The US will tighten its testing requirements for inbound travelers in response to the new Omicron COVID variant. Passengers will now need to take a COVID test within 24 hours of departure, rather than the 72 hours under current rules. The changes are set to be adopted as early as next week. The US confirmed its first case of the Omicron variant in Northern California on Wednesday.

Israel OKs CH-53K helicopter buy from Lockheed Martin
The Israeli government has approved the planned procurement of a fleet of a dozen CH-53K helicopters, clearing a final regulatory hurdle for the buy and clearing the path for a final agreement to be signed by the end of the year.

Norway To Sell Its F-16 Fighter Jets To A PMC
The Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency has signed a contract to sell up to 12 F-16 combat aircraft to US military provider Draken International to be used as part of training services, the Norwegian government announced on Thursday on its website. The contract was signed on Monday by the director of the Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency, Mette Sorfonden.

Police Arrest Man Near Frankfurt Runway After Go-Around
A Moroccan national was arrested on December 1st at Frankfurt Airport after he managed to make his way onto one of the facility’s runways. Due to the event, air traffic for the runway was temporarily suspended, forcing one flight to perform a go-around. The individual in question was apprehended and deported the next day.

Eurodrone program stalls as Spain delays approval
Launched in 2015, the European MALE (Medium altitude, long endurance) drone project brought together France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. It regroups Airbus as the development leader, with French Dassault Aviation and Italy's Leonardo as partners. The European Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) contract was supposed to be signed in 2019. However, the program was stalled following disagreements about the price of the drone, with some concerned that a MALE drone could hardly enter today’s market if it was more expensive than its competitors, especially the U.S.-built General Atomics Reaper drone.
