Man arrested at San Jose Airport after claiming to swallow explosive device
Local police in San Jose, California arrested a man on September 20, 2021 after he entered a secure area of Norman Mineta Y. San Jose International Airport (SJC) and claimed to be in possession of explosive devices.
Police were called around 07:30 local time for a security breach at the south end of the airport. It appeared that an intruder followed an airport employee driving to work and was able to get past the security gate.

Airbus, Air Liquide and Vinci Airports announce a partnership to promote the use of hydrogen
Airbus, Air Liquide and Vinci Airports, three major players in the aviation, hydrogen and airport industries, are working together to promote the use of hydrogen at airports and build the European airport network to accommodate future hydrogen aircrafts. The airport of Lyon-Saint Exupéry (France) will host the first installations as early as 2023. This partnership reflects the three groups’ shared ambition to combine their respective expertise to support the decarbonization of air travel.

Boeing anticipates 90% of European fleet will be replaced by 2040
Boeing anticipates “steady growth” for the European aircraft market over the next 20 years. The manufacturer expects that 90% of the current fleet in Europe will be replaced by new aircraft.
Boeing forecasts demand for 8,705 new aircraft valued at €1.25 trillion ($1.5 trillion) in the European market through 2040, according to the company’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO). The demand for new aircraft will be driven by the growth of low-cost carriers as well as the rapidly expanding leisure travel market.

Airbus unveils next generation electric flying taxi
European aircraft manufacturer Airbus unveiled plans for its newest electric flying taxi — another future competitor in the expanding electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft market.
The first flight of Airbus’ newest eVTOL is expected to take off in 2023 and the manufacturer hopes it will be certified around 2025.

Pratt & Whitney receives $25M FAA backing for ultra-quiet engine fan
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investing $25 million into the development of a new Pratt & Whitney ultra-quiet aircraft engine fan, as well as into a new advanced combustion technology.
Pratt & Whitney announced that the FAA is supporting the American aircraft engine manufacturer with a $25 million investment, to help develop technologies that are expected to reduce jet engine noise as well as make them more fuel-efficient and cut emissions. The manufacturer noted that together with its own $25 million investment, a total of $50 million has been allocated for the ultra-quiet engine fan project.

GOL to launch a network of 250 eVTOL aircraft in Brazil
GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes S.A., Brazil’s largest airline, in conjunction with Grupo Comporte, an entity of its controlling shareholder, announce that they have signed a non-binding letter of intent with Avolon for the acquisition and/or lease of 250 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Following aircraft certification and successful delivery of the aircraft, the Company expects to start operating a flight network in Brazil using eVTOL planes by mid-2025.

PLAY to lease four Airbus neo aircraft from GECAS
GECAS has reached an agreement to provide three A320neo and one A321NX narrow body aircraft from its skyline to PLAY, the newly operating Icelandic low-cost airline. The aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between autumn 2022 and spring 2023.
Based in Reykjavík’s Keflavík International Airport and commencing operations in June of this year, PLAY’s current fleet of three A321neo connects passengers to ten locations across Europe.

easyJet will add two aircraft in Malaga, two in Palma de Mallorca and one in Faro, sees an uptick in bookings
As the European aviation market continues to recover, easyJet has today announced it will be expanding its network of seasonal bases by adding five more aircraft across bases Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Faro from May 2022. The investment will create around 120 direct jobs in Spain where the airline currently employs more than 400 people, all under local contracts along with 30 jobs in the Faro base.

Republic Airways to move its headquarters to Carmel, IN
The City of Carmel and Republic Airways have jointly announced that Republic Airways plans to move its training activities and corporate headquarters to Carmel, Indiana. Republic, one of the largest regional airlines in the U.S., will be part of a redevelopment project along the Meridian (U.S. 31) Corporate Corridor. In addition to its headquarters, the site will include a high-tech training facility for pilots, technicians, flight attendants and other positions within the airline, the expansion of an adjacent hotel and a new parking garage wrapped with commercial amenities on the first floor and multifamily living above.

Western Sydney Airport to offer a faster passenger travel experience
Cutting-edge technology and innovative design will come together on the airfield at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI, IATA: SWZ) to set a new benchmark for air travel in Australia.

Riga Airport opens new self-service baggage drop-off points
Four self-service baggage drop-off points are now open at Riga Airport (RIX), and the national airline airBaltic is the first to offer its passengers the opportunity to use this new airport service.
The self-service baggage drop-off points are located in the airport’s departure hall at check-in desks No. 8-11, where airBaltic passengers who have already checked in for a flight online or at airport’s self-service check-in kiosks and received a boarding pass can drop off their checked baggage. Non-standard baggage, such as prams, sports equipment, oversize baggage and similar items may not be checked in at the self-service drop-off points.

China docks Tianzhou-3 cargo ship to its new space station
China’s Tianzhou-3 cargo spacecraft launched on September 20, 2021, carrying special equipment to the new Chinese Space Station (CSS).
The Long March-7 rocket carrying the Tianzhou-3 cargo spacecraft launched at 7:10 GMT from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan, Chinese state media reported. After about seven hours of flight, the Tianzhou-3 cargo spacecraft docked with the CSS’s new core module Tianhe.
