Massive brawl at London Luton Airport, four injured and 17 arrested
Four people were injured, and 17 people were arrested after a mass fight broke out on Friday in an airport departure lounge at London Luton Airport.
Three of the injured people are in hospital with serious injuries in the brawl. Bedfordshire Police were aware of the incident at 8 am on Friday. Those arrested were taken into custody for further questioning on suspicion of violent disorder.

INCIDENT A door of a Pilatus PC-12 broke off and flew before takeoff
An emergency exit door on an aircraft broke off and flew into the runway just as the plane was about to take off.
The small eight-seater Boutique Airlines plane was taxiing down the runway at Minneapolis Airport when the incident occurred on 5 May.

A woman traveling from Salt Lake City to Hawaii for a family vacation was unknowingly pregnant and gave birth mid flight with the help of on board doctors.
A doctor and a team of neonatal medical professionals were in the right place at the right time — helping a Utah woman deliver her baby onboard an hourslong flight to Hawaii.

Boeing expands partnership with COOPESA to convert more 737-800s to freighters, FAA approves fix for 737 MAX electrical flaw
Boeing has announced a new partnership with a Costa Rica-based maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider to create additional conversion capacity for the 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter.
Boeing will open two 737-800BCF conversion lines with Cooperativa Autogestionaria de Servicios Aeroindustriales (COOPESA) in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

The long death of Frigate Ecojet, Russia’s revolutionary wide-body
Frigate Ecojet was a Russian project of a wide-body, four-aisle airliner with an oval fuselage cross-section. The team aimed to develop an airplane for a market long-occupied by Airbus and Boeing, and do it with the energy and resources of a startup. They drew from the roots of the whole Russian aviation industry but tried to uphold the standards and operations of a modern company.

Irkut receives first Russian-made MC-21 composite wing
The first MC-21-300 wing made of Russian composite materials was delivered to Irkut, at its assembly line of Irkutsk Aviation Plant.
The 17,5-meter-long wing panel was made by the Russian company JSC AeroComposite, using a domestic fiber developed among others by Moscow State University and Rosatom.

Qantas to operate special supermoon scenic flight
Qantas has launched a special scenic flight over Sydney to view the last super moon and lunar eclipse of 2021.
A Boeing 787 Dreamliner will operate the flight on May 26th. The Dreamliner will depart Sydney on a three-hour scenic flight, beginning with a flyover over the Harbour before climbing to a cruising altitude of 43,000ft.

American Airlines welcomes all customers on quarantine-free flights to Italy
American Airlines has offered customers quarantine-free flights from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Milan (MXP) since April 2 and on flights from JFK to Rome (FCO) as of May 8. With the recent change in Italy’s travel restrictions, any customers, whether traveling for leisure or essential business, are eligible to fly on American’s flights from New York to Italy starting May 16.

Breeze Airways receives its AOC, ready to launch – routes?
Breeze Airways on May 14 received its Part 121 Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Breeze is the idea of former JetBlue founder David Neeleman (below). Operations can now start soon.

Wizz Air announces 32 new routes from Rome to 19 countries
Wizz Air has announced a total of 32 new routes from Rome (Fiumicino) to holiday destinations in 19 countries. FCO will become the fifth base in Italy for the airline. Routes will start mostly in July with four based Airbus A321neos.

United hopes for quick Boeing 737 MAX return after electric fault fix
Following the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for the fixes of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft electrical issues, United Airlines have already begun their repairs on affected aircraft. The American carrier expects a quick return of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

CEO of South African Airways hints flights resumption
With commercial services halted since September 2020, the state-owned flag carrier South African Airways considers resuming its operations in the summer of 2021.
Speaking at a hearing with a parliamentary committee on May 14, 2021, Thomas Kgokolo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of South African Airways (SAA) disclosed that the airline plans to resume flights in July or August 2021.

Finavia has announced that it is investing €7 million in the renovation of Helsinki Airport’s (HEL) air traffic area in summer 2021. The goal is to ensure the smooth taxiing and apron operations of aircraft, as well as to further improve the management of stormwater.

Cargo volumes at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) are rising, although passenger numbers continue to struggle, based on the gateway’s April traffic statistics, released today by Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK).

New Fly Well Clinic opens at John Wayne Airport
California’s John Wayne Airport has announced the opening of a Fly Well Clinic, making it one of just a few airports in the US to offer travellers onsite COVID-19 vaccinations, urgent care, telehealth consultations and vital screenings.
Located post-security in Terminal B across from Gate 10, the new clinic also will offer flu shots during the annual flu season.

China’s Mars rover is set to land on the Red Planet
On May 14, 2021, China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced that China’s Tianwen-1 spacecraft would enter the last stage of its mission ‒ landing on Mars. If it succeeds, the rover, named Zhurong (‘God of Fire’), will be released to study the Red Planet.
