US-China trade tensions a growing widebody risk to Boeing
Boeing is warning that escalating trade tensions between the US and China—the US manufacturer’s largest single market—may soon threaten prospective aircraft sales, particularly the company’s lucrative twinjet 777 and 787 families. Detailing the threat, Boeing president and CEO Dennis Muilenburg said China orders form a key element of Boeing’s planning for future production totals and assembly rates.

Brazil’s Azul takes first Embraer E195-E2
Azul Brazilian Airlines plans to double in size over the next five years as the carrier continues to grow its Embraer E2, Airbus A320neo and A330 fleets. The airline took delivery of its first Embraer 195-E2 Sept. 12 and will be the type’s first operator. Azul plans to introduce the aircraft into revenue service by the end of October, initially on the route from its Campinas hub to Brasilia. The airline will take five more 195-E2s before the end of 2019.

Tunisair Express renews fleet with ATR 72-600s
Tunisair Express, the regional subsidiary of the North African nation’s flag carrier, has ordered three ATR 72-600 regional turboprops.  
The aircraft will renew Tunisair Express’s regional fleet, which consists of two earlier-model ATR 72-500s that replaced first-generation -200 series aircraft. It also has a single Bombardier CRJ900 in its inventory.

Singapore Airlines A330 to take over SilkAir’s 737 Busan route
Singapore Airlines (SIA) will be taking over the 4X-weekly Singapore-Busan route from its regional subsidiary SilkAir. Subject to regulatory approval, the transfer will begin Oct. 28.
SIA will deploy the Airbus A330-300, upguaged from the current Boeing 737-800, with a 76% capacity increase.

​Transat posts Q3 adjusted profit ahead of Air Canada takeover
Transat AT, parent company of Air Transat, reported adjusted net income of C$5.7 million ($4.3 million) for its third quarter of fiscal year 2019, an upward swing from an adjusted net loss of C$5.0 million in the same period in 2018.
But the company reported a C$11 million net loss when accounting for "unusual" items, including C$13.7 million in expenses related to a pending acquisition of Transat by Air Canada.

Two fatalities confirmed in Toledo Convair 440 crash
Two fatalities resulted from the Convair 440 crash near Toledo Express airport on 11 September.
Preliminary US FAA incident data lists the aircraft as having a single crew member and a single passenger on board.

Coffee spill forced A330 diversion after radio failures
UK investigators have revealed that reluctance to use a cockpit cup-holder resulted in coffee being spilled over control panels on a Condor Airbus A330, causing substantial radio communications problems and forcing a diversion.
The A330-200 had been operating from Frankfurt to Cancun on 6 February this year.

Cathay to trim capacity growth after dismal August
Cathay Pacific saw a 38% decline year-on-year in inbound traffic to Hong Kong in August, the same month anti-government protests hit fever pitch, leading to airport closures and flight disruptions.
In its monthly traffic figures, Cathay states that it had an “incredibly challenging” August, a month where it traditionally has a strong showing.

PICTURE: First Fiji A350-900 out of paint shop
Fiji Airways’ first Airbus A350-900s will enter service in January 2020, and will fly to Sydney and Los Angeles.
The aircraft, the first of two leased by the carrier, emerged from the Airbus paint shop in Toulouse, complete in Fiji’s livery. It will next get its engines installed, before embarking on ground and flight tests.

Protesters to begin five days of drone disruption at Heathrow
Environment protest group Heathrow Pause plans to disrupt flights at London Heathrow Airport for at least five days from Sept. 13 by illegally flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, within the airport’s exclusion zone.
The group opposes Heathrow’s expansion plans and wants to draw attention to the impact of rising emissions on climate change.

Groupe Dubreuil makes offer for Aigle Azur’s Orly slots
Groupe Dubreuil, the parent company of Air Caraïbes and French Bee, is interested in the Paris Orly slots belonging to Aigle Azur, the company’s top executives said Sept. 12.
Following difficulties with its long-haul expansion strategy and an attempted shareholder coup, French leisure carrier Aigle Azur went into receivership Sept. 2.

Self-protection deal safeguards RAF's Shadow fleet
The Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) Shadow R1 fleet of intelligence-gathering aircraft is to receive a major self-protection upgrade, intended to safeguard the Beechcraft King Air 350CER-based type against attack using infrared-guided missiles.
Announced at the DSEI exhibition in London on 11 September, the defensive aids system (DAS) enhancement will be delivered by an industry team involving Leonardo UK and Thales UK, which have worked with the nation's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory during previous trials.

Leonardo steps up AW149 offer to military sector
Leonardo has launched a new effort to pitch its AW149 medium-twin to military customers, displaying the type at the heart of its exhibit at the 10-13 September DSEI show in London.
Describing the rotorcraft as “an ideal candidate to replace legacy platforms”, Leonardo says it could be applied across a variety of roles, including troop transport, combat search and rescue and medical evacuation, and used in support of special forces operations.
