Mitsubishi targets Latin America as MRJ testing ramps up
Mitsubishi Aircraft continues to eye Latin America for orders for its MRJ regional jets, with the company's Americas chief predicting sales will begin to accumulate as soon as the region's economy improves. Masao Yamagami, chairman and chief executive of Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation America, predicts that Latin American carriers will need 350 regional jets in the MRJ size within 20 years.

Recovering Bombardier needs four more good years
Bombardier is now nearly a year into a five-year recovery plan outlined by chief executive Alain Bellemare last December, and, so far, so (mostly) good. The long-neglected backlog for the CSeries has been salvaged by a spurt of orders in the first four months of 2016, albeit at the cost of $500 million in onerous contract provision to cover the loss-making deals.

Sukhoi delivers first SSJ100s with variable cabin layout
Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Co. (SCAC) has delivered the first two of six Sukhoi Superjet 100s (SSJ100s) with a new variable cabin layout to the State Transport Leasing Co. The aircraft will be delivered to Russia’s Yamal Airlines in November, followed by the rest by the end of the year.

Aegean Airlines lifted by $84 million 3Q net income
Aegean Airlines reported a third-quarter net income of €74.9 million ($84 million), up 11.6% from €67.1 million in 3Q 2015. The Greek carrier has quickly rebounded after slipping into the red in the first half of 2016, with a 1H net loss of €23.7 million, reversed from a net profit of €14.8 million in the year-ago half.

Aerolineas to phase out A340s by end-2018
Aerolineas Argentinas plans to phase out its fuel-guzzling Airbus A340s by end-2018 as the airline continues to work towards financial profitability under the ownership of a new government. The SkyTeam carrier still operates four A340s, and is evaluating a replacement for the aircraft type, Aerolineas chief executive Isela Costantini tells FlightGlobal on the sidelines of the ALTA Airline Leaders Forum in Mexico City.

Aeromar orders ATR -600 series aircraft
Mexico City-based Aeromar has signed an order for eight firm ATR -600 series aircraft, comprising six 72-600s and two 42-600s, plus options for six additional 72-600s. The first of the new -600s will arrive in December 2016. The ATR -600s are equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW 127M engines.

AirBaltic to launch Bombardier CSeries 300 service Dec. 14
Latvian carrier airBaltic has confirmed the first Bombardier CSeries 300 (CS300) will make its commercial debut between Riga and Amsterdam Dec. 14. “The historic first airBaltic commercial flight with Bombardier CS300 will link Riga with Amsterdam,” airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss said.

AirBridgeCargo volume up 30% in October
Russia´s AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC), a member of Volga-Dnepr Group, carried 57,608 tonnes of cargo in October, up 30% year-over-year (YOY). During January-October, the airline carried 498,177 tonnes across its international route network, up 29% YOY. In 2015, ABC’s carried volume reached 483,000 tonnes.

Avianca chief prefers JV for strategic partner
Latin American airline group Avianca would prefer a desired strategic partnership to take the form of a joint venture, although the airline is also open to a capital investment, says chief executive Hernan Rincon. A joint venture will ideally allow Avianca and its partnering airline to jointly procure aircraft to achieve better prices from the airframers, he tells FlightGlobal on the sidelines of the ALTA Leaders Forum in Mexico City.

Lufthansa faces new pilot strike threat
Lufthansa has reacted strongly to a fresh threat of strike action from the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, labeling it as “absolutely incomprehensible.” The German carrier, which has proposed a 2.5% pay increase, is calling for further talks with the union to avoid a walkout. VC said it is demanding a 3.66% average pay increase per year.

Nok Air widens 3Q loss
Thailand low-cost carrier (LCC) Nok Air reported a consolidated third-quarter net loss of THB1.1 billion ($30.2 million), deepened from a loss of THB652.6 million in the same period last year. Third-quarter passenger revenue was up 4.3% year-over-year, mostly because of the LCC’s international network expansion. However, in the much larger domestic operation, revenue fell 7% “to fit the existing pilot capacity,” the airline said. The overall revenue increase was lower than expected.

Spring Airlines net profit falls 26% in 3Q
Shanghai-based Spring Airlines posted a third-quarter net profit of CNY429.5 million ($64.4 million), down 26.3% over a net income of CNY582.8 million in the year-ago quarter. Third-quarter operating revenue increased 9.7% to CNY2.6 billion while operating expenses grew 20.6% year-over-year (YOY) to CNY2.2 billion in the quarter.

Southwest Airlines begins Cuba flights
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines began scheduled commercial flights to Cuba Nov. 13 with the launch of 2X-daily service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) and Varadero, Cuba, a resort city 87 miles east of Havana. “Our employees have worked hard to open this route and a new chapter for people who want to connect with Cuba in ways that matter most to them,” Southwest VP-ground operations Steve Goldberg said.

Two A400M transports make air-to-air refuelling contact
Airbus Defence & Space has carried out two test flights at its facility in Seville, Spain, to evaluate the air-to-air refuelling capabilities of its A400M strategic transport. During the flights, 50 contacts between the two A400Ms were made in both level flight and during turns, using a hose-and-drum add-on kit that enables the Atlas to refuel large aircraft.

Greece receives first ex-US Army Chinooks
Greece has received the first three of an eventual 10 Boeing CH-47D Chinook heavy-lift rotorcraft that it has bought from the US Army. Arriving at the port of Piraeus on 11 November, the Chinooks will join the already 15-strong fleet operated by the Hellenic Army.
