Germany-based airberlin will increase flights to the US up to 50% by summer 2017, from 55 to 78 weekly nonstop flights from Berlin and Dusseldorf compared to this summer. “At our hub in Berlin Tegel and Dusseldorf, airberlin is the carrier with the highest number of flights to the US already this year. By further enhancing our long-haul network, we continue to strengthen our leading market position and sharpen our profile as a network carrier with a highly attractive portfolio,” airberlin CEO Stefan Pichler said in a statement.

Allegiant’s A320 order a potential negative: Moody’s
Moody’s Investors Service considers Allegiant Air’s order for 12 new Airbus A320s a credit negative, but maintains its Ba3 rating and stable outlook for the carrier. The rating agency expects “free cash flow to turn negative and return on capital for these aircraft to be lower than if the company added 12 more 12-year old A320s to the fleet instead”, it said in a comment on 2 August.

ANA net profit falls 20% in fiscal 1Q on earthquakes, terrorism
Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) reported a net profit of ¥6.6 billion ($65.2 million) in the fiscal first quarter, down 20%, mainly because of earthquakes in southern Japan and concerns about terrorist attacks in Europe. The carrier saw its revenue decline 2.3% in 1Q/FY2016, a reversal of recent growth trends. ANA’s main competitor Japan Airlines (JAL) also reported weaker results for the quarter, with a net profit drop of 55%, citing the same factors. However, like JAL, ANA is not changing its profit guidance for the full fiscal year.

However, the aircraft was destroyed by a large fire and the Dubai government said one firefighter was killed.

Emirates crash: Communications point to possible go-around
Preliminary analysis of air traffic control transmissions indicate that the Emirates Boeing 777 involved in an accident at Dubai might have been attempting a missed approach at the time. While the recorded communications with Dubai’s tower controllers are largely indistinct, flight EK521 initially confirms a landing clearance on runway 12L.

Emirates 777 sent flight data after crash landing
The crashed Emirates 777 wirelessly transmitted critical flight data within minutes of the accident to airline officials, the supplier of the data storage and transmission device says. Raul Segredo, president and chief executive of Avionica, says the device spared safety investigators a search through the wreckage for the flight data recorder to recover immediate data about the last seconds of the landing sequence.

USAF declares F-35A ready for limited combat
Five years after the projected initial operational capability (IOC) date, the Air Force has declared the first 15 Lockheed Martin F-35As assigned to the 34th Fighter Squadron at Hill AFB are capable of performing a basic set of combat missions. While the US Marine Corps F-35B reached IOC last summer, the F-35A’s IOC announcement represents a significant milestone for both the US and international partners involved in the 15-year development of the Joint Strike Fighter. The USAF has committed to buy 1,763 F-35As alone, while the Marine Corps and Navy have a combined to order 640 B- and C-variants respectively. Most international partners intend to procure the A variant, which is now projected to cost $106 million per copy over the life of the acquisition, according to a 2016 Defense Department selected acquisition report.

US Air Force Air Combat Command chief Gen Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle doubts the need for a new, low-end close air support aircraft when he foresees fewer more contested environments in the future. During a media briefing announcing initial operational capability for the F-35A, the USAF’s stealth aircraft designed to take on combat zones populated with surface-to-air-missiles, Carlisle expressed skepticism over the possible acquisition of a new light-attack aircraft that would operate in permissive environments.

Aviation Quote

And I have yet to find one single individual who has attained conspicuous success in bringing down enemy aeroplanes who can be said to be spoiled either by his successes or by the generous congratulations of his comrades. If he were capable of being spoiled he would not have had the character to have won continuous victories, for the smallest amount of vanity is fatal in aeroplane fighting. Self-distrust rather is the quality to which many a pilot owes his protracted existence.

- Captain Edward V. 'Eddie' Rickenbacker, USAS, 'Fighting the Flying Circus.'

And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen
