Alaska Air Group reports increase in July traffic, capacity
Traffic for Alaska Air Group increased by 6.4% in July while capacity expressed in available seat miles jumped by 6.9% for the month, according to the company. That increase included a 5.7% traffic increase on Alaska Airlines over July 2014.

Cause of fatal Asiana 747F fire undetermined
Korean investigators have been unable to determine the origin of the fire which brought down an Asiana Airlines Boeing 747-400 freighter off Jeju. But the inquiry believes it started in the vicinity of two pallets, loaded in the aft main deck, which were carrying dangerous goods. The blaze spread “rapidly”, says Korean investigation authority ARAIB, and could not be suppressed.

Delta, American, United announce policies banning big game trophies
Several U.S. carriers, including Delta, American and United, have announced they will no longer carry big game trophies in the wake of the killing of Cecil the Lion. Effective immediately, the carriers are banning the shipment of trophy animals including the remains of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros on their aircraft.

Delta encourages Colombia tourism with new vacation packages
Delta Air Lines is offering a new suite of vacation deals built around its non-stop flights from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and New York JFK International Airport to Bogota, Colombia. The package deals are available at over 20 hotels in the capital city.

Kenya Airways May Need USD$600 Mln Bailout
Kenya Airways, which reported a record loss in its year ended March, may require a USD$500 million - USD$600 million bailout, the Kenyan finance minister said.

United Airlines offers tablet rentals on routes to Hawaii, Guam
United Airlines is trying out a new program that makes Samsung Galaxy tablets available for rental on flights to Hawaii from the continental U.S. and from Hawaii to Guam. "Later this year we will look at customer feedback to decide if we want to expand to other routes," said spokeswoman Karen May. "We did this under the premise of giving our customers another choice of entertainment because we know how important that is to them."

Laderman named acting CFO at United Airlines
Gerald Laderman has been named as acting chief financial officer for United Airlines, succeeding John Rainey who left to take a new position. "Gerry's financial leadership and deep experience in airline finance are well known on Wall Street, and his significant role in developing and executing United's strategic and financial plans has proved invaluable over the years," said Chairman, President and CEO Jeff Smisek.

Chinese Regulator Suspends Shenzhen Airport Approvals
China's aviation regulator said it will withhold approvals of new air routes, chartered services and additional flights at Shenzhen Baoan Airport for the rest of the year due to its mishandling of major flight delays. The delays at the second-tier Shenzhen airport since the second half of 2014 have led to several serious incidents, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said in a rare rebuke. Delays at the airport have triggered four major incidents in May alone, the CAAC said.

Spanish ATC Could Strike Again In September
Spanish air traffic controllers will suspend strikes in August to avoid disruptions in one of the busiest months for tourist arrivals, but could resume them in September. Controllers held four days of partial strikes in June and July in protest against sanctions by airport operator Aena on 61 air controllers in Barcelona.

Israel evaluates converted 767 as tanker alternative
Israeli is evaluating a converted Boeing 767 passenger aircraft as its air force’s next aerial refueling tanker. "We have to replace our old Boeing 707 aerial refueling aircraft and we look at two main options – the Boeing KC-46A and the 767 that Israel Aerospace Industries [IAI] is converting as a flying refueling station," a senior air force source says. The KC-46A – which Boeing is developing for the US Air Force – was originally the only platform under consideration. However, program delays now appear to have rendered the converted 767 as a viable alternative.

RAF Tornado squadron to continue fighting militants in Iraq
Panavia Tornado GR4 aircraft from the Royal Air Force’s 12 Sqn will continue to operate against Islamic State militants in Iraq until March 2017, further delaying the retirement of the type from UK service. Announced by UK defence secretary Michael Fallon on 4 August, the “spearheading” squadron will continue to “offer the essential precision firepower, intelligence and surveillance needed” for another year.

Marines' smiling Sea Knight farewelled after 51 years
After 51 years of service with the US Marine Corps, the Boeing-Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight flew for the last time 1 August at a retirement ceremony in Chantilly, Virginia. The “Phrog,” which made its combat debut in Vietnam, is being put on display at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, but will eventually move to a new annex at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia.
