These masks have been designed for surgeons, so that no potentially infectious droplets from their respiratory system will contaminate an open surgical wound.
In other words, they were not designed to prevent stuff from going out, not from going in. So the only scenario where wearing a mask in public makes sense is when you yourself caught a flu, and want to protect others in your vincinity.
The other small positive effect from wearing a mask is that keeps you from picking your nose or poking in your mouth, which can lead to an infection when your hands aren't clean.
Washing your hands more frequently than usual is something that would make sense. Even the moderate use of mild disinfectants at home is not unreasonable, especially when anybody in the house already came down with a flu.
But other than making you feel better, wearing a mask will have little to no effect.
