Golden brown, dripping with grease, crunchy and wrapped in newspaper. No bones. I hate bones. Make it a double order. No vinegar. I hate vinegar. With Heinz ketchup on the side. Yep. A cup of ketchup. And two pints of lager.

YUMM. That looks amazing. I love some good Fish and Chips. NWA742 and I enjoyed some downtown on the bay a couple months ago. I use ketchup for the fries, but I think what really makes the fish and chips good is GREAT Tartar sauce. Good tartar sauce is the key. (Pardon my yank ignorance but) Do they have tartar sauce in the UK?

Sorry, I see the "lager" part. No reason it can't be the non-alcoholic root-kind, though. Actually, I don't drink, I saw the pic and immediately thought of what I would use to put it down.

Call it. Google "area codes", find what you think Mark's is, and start dialing. Place an order in Mark's name. {silly}

Vinegar is what makes fish and chips.

Damn it, now I'm hungry.

So you like fish sticks eh?

I guess that means you are a gay fish.

If you are going to beer batter fish you need to do that with Halibut...not cod.

You'd be in trouble in Blackpool - my home town is widely renowned as the home of fish and chips. We have around 150 fish and chip shops here {crazy}

Blasphemer! Fish and chips come with salt and vinegar and maybe a dollop of tartar sauce.
A million great ideas...

When I'm in the UK, I've learned to REALLY emphasize the "no vinegar" thing when I order and as they're serving it. I've just never liked vinegar. God knows I've tried. And like most Americans, I drown the chips in loads of ketchup, which has gotten me some strange looks. Nearly got into a pissing match with the manager of a chippy in Dover because of it. He was really proud of his product and felt it should be served the way HE wanted.

Best fish and chips I had was at Newlyn, in Cornwall - and it was ling. (Great thing about being yards from the harbour, not only was it so fresh it was practically wriggling, but you got all the weird things they'd happened to catch.) Supposedly cod-like, but it was so beautifully milky. Nothing else I've had has come close.

Yeah, those are mushy peas, kind of like a hearty pea 'stew', and I guess its traditional to go with English fish and chips.

Wasn't bad, but not highlight of the dish!

I love authentic english fish and chips, but I absolutely hate those disgusting peas.
At home in the PNW and loving it

I had a couple of really good hamburgers at church today. Mouthwateringly good to be exact. And yet, I still thought of this thread. I now crave fish and chips with a passion. When I went to the UK, I tried to sample some, but the pub I was at was out of chips. {grumpy}

Deadly. As it should be. :))

Quite right too - lovely fish and chips in Cornwall - especially as the fish is so fresh and the water is somewhat less polluted than the Irish Sea or North Sea....

I come from a little fishing village further up the coast from Newlyn - between Falmouth and Mevagissey, and never fail to get great fish and chips when i go home.

Oh and I have mine with vinegar every time :))
