Everything that would not belong anywhere else.

A 17 year old girl in Romania has died while attempting to Twitter from her bathtub.

Flavia Boricea (incorrectly named on some sites as Maria Barbu) is believed to have been electrocuted while trying to plug her laptop in to continue a Twitter session interrupted by a flat battery. Reports on how she was electrocuted aren’t precise: Romanian State television said that the electrocution was due to her having wet hands, although other reports suggest the laptop fell into the bath.

She was found dead in the bathtub by her parents, with her laptop lying next to her.

It probably goes without saying folks: Twitter and bath water don’t mix.

Ugh, I've seen people texting while driving, but this girl certainly takes the cake for the Darwin in the Tech related category.

Just last night...driving home...I watched a girl behind me in a Honda CRV messing with her hair...the next block it was texting...the block after she was in her purse.

I changed lanes.

Two blocks later?

You guessed it.

She rear-ended a BMW.

@ElectricCompany OMGz you're killing mez lolz.

One thing I don't get... any laptop I've ever seen the main cord plugs into a transformer box. The juice coming from that box to the laptop is what, like 12v and pretty low amperage. How the hell does that kill you?
I'm baaaaaaack.

Extension cord? Inline transformer fell in the water?

Voltage doesn't kill you, amperage does.

Volts make you wiggle
Amps make you fry

But it's still got to be pretty low amperage coming through there too, no?

I'm no electrician, but I know that volts = amps X resistance.

If this Tweeter was laying in the bathtub, her resistance would drop to practically nothing. The current (amps) increases in direct proportion to the loss of resistance if the laptop is putting out a steady 12 volts. If the amps increased and went through her heart, it's not hard to see how she could die...

It only takes a few milliamps to stop your heart.

electrocuted while trying to plug her laptop in to continue a Twitter session

She was in the process of a "plug in" is my theory.

She was half in and half out of the tub. Feet still in the water with one hand on the metal water faucet for support and the other reaching out with a cord for the plug receptacle. She is very wet. Some of this wetness drips into the plug receptacle. Current enters her hand and goes to ground in two ways at once. one, through other hand holding faucet via heart and two, through feet into water and down metal drain. Or to put simply...

Ended up worse than this girl.

"Today, I had a bath in the bathroom we are currently renovating. There's a big hole in the middle of the floor. When I got out of the bath, I swung one leg across the gap to get a towel from the rack. I drew back my leg and looked down to see my brother's hot friend staring up at me in horror. FML"

I didn't Google anything actually. I regularly read FML and came across that one today. Honest. :)

Those things usually put out 3-5 amps. 1/10th of an amp can kill. Think of voltage as how much "pressure" electricity has behind it. So 12V is relatively benign as it can't easily penetrate your skin, but add water and that changes. It's also possible that the transformer fell into the water, which is 110V (oops, Europe) 220V.
