Not a good week for former U.S. Senators.

Carl Levin, Michigan's longest serving U.S. Senator dead at 87. No cause given. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier.

A Washington insider, Levin took a civil but straightforward approach to governance, and he worked effectively with Republicans and fellow Democrats. He was a longtime member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and co-chaired the Senate Auto Caucus, which promoted policies benefiting the domestic car industry.

He was the kind of Senator we need, a lot of common sense and able to work with Senators on both sides of the aisle. Not expecting everything and willing to compromise on substance, but not principle, to get things done.

Asner is most-remembered for his Mary Tyler Moore role, but not many people remember a later series, which was a dramatic show.

That was one show my parents made us 3 kids watch every week... Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM. It was a tool in their repertoire to teach us about race relations while growing up in rural Wisconsin... the whitest of white towns east of the Mississippi.
