I'm as patriotic as the next guy, but a 3x5-foot outdoor flag displayed indoors in a small office occupied by four people is a little overkill. And the hospital is within their right to limit displays of personal property. I suspect a smaller flag would not have been as flaunting and "threatening."

I also suspect there's more to the story than what's being reported. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a verbal spat between the woman and her officemate prior to hospital officials getting involved. I'll leave to your imagination as to how that confrontation probably went.

If it were me, I'd display a blue star service banner.

Her only mistake was in which flag she put up. Here's the one she should have had:

We had flags up in our office and one crumudgeon kept coming around and taking them down. Of course that was when Bush was in office, I'm sure he'd love to see them up now.

Unfortunately all it takes is one unhappy camper to ruin the party for everyone anymore.

Woudul they have made the African lady take down, for example, a Zimbabwe flag, if she had it hung up?

I have a 4x6 American Flag in one corner of my office and a 4x6 Texas Flag in the other corner.

News flash, they are flags. Even on flag poles and properly spaced like mine, they don't take up much room at all so it doesn't matter if it's a small office or the penthouse suite.

The flag can be gaudy if it's too large for the venue. I think those huge 40 foot flags that fly outside of Perkins restaurants are gaudy. Asthetically, there's way too much flag for the size of the property.

I have the same 3' x 5' US flag over my bed that I've had for years. The church I attend proudly waves a huge (what, 40' ?) all the time prominently in the front. I'm sure the person who had a problem with this in TX would find fault with my personal flag and the one where I attend. Anyone who does can take their shallow bitter self and let their indignation burn just a little more for all I care.
