American Airlines Cancelling 100s of Flights

All about Airlines and Airliners.

Looks like AA is having a problem staffing their 737 flights this weekend. Seems to be getting ugly.

On Friday, June 18, 2021, American canceled 83 flights
On Saturday, June 19, 2021, American canceled 123 flights
On Sunday, June 20, 2021, American canceled 167 flights
On Monday, June 21, 2021, American canceled 97 flights

The cancelations seem to primarily be focused on the Boeing 737 fleet

Evidently wait times for an agent on the phone are pretty dismal as well.

Vic, what's happening to your favorite airline? :))

Looks like it might continue past this weekend.....

American told ABC News that most of the cancelations are on A320 and 737 aircraft, but that it may continue to cancel at least 50 to 60 flights per day for the rest of June and 50 to 80 flights per day through July.

This is a very odd meltdown. Glad I'm not flyin' 'em.

Also, how do they prioritize flights when they know they're going to be hosing people? Is it based on revenue?

To a degree it is based on revenue. Also based on aircraft utilization, crew scheduling, and MX requirements.

I'd have to go find a link but I thought I read this morning they're looking at cancelling 80-100 flights a day for foreseeable future. {bugeye}

Kind of sounds like they are caught in a vicious circle. They can't get the wide body fleet on a decent schedule till the pilots rebid and retrain, and to take those pilots that bid back to the narrow body fleet out to train it leaves a shortage till junior pilots are pulled back in and retrained.

I thought the CARES act said they couldn't furlough anyone? Shouldn't have all the pilots been flying at least some hours a month?

Thanks Pep. {thumbsup}

Yes, I admit...I'm an idiot...but this doesn't make sense to me given I thought they were all but required to stay current under the CARES act...

Well, it's not just that pilots on a certain fleet were no longer current. Some went to other aircraft in the fleet. Others took LOAs. Others furloughed. Some quit.
Make Orwell fiction again.
